Build Your Own RC Plane

Inkscape

Many wonder ‘” how can you build your own RC plane? There are many ways to build your own RC plane, depending on what kind of flying you are trying to accomplish. There are plastic, balsa wood and foam planes, to name a few and when you build your own RC plane you will be able to choose for yourself. If you are simply trying to accomplish the goal of flying a plane in your backyard, you will probably only need foam to build your own RC plane. This material is lightweight, is very inexpensive and you only need a little bit of it to build your own RC plane. To build your own RC plane out of foam, simply go to your local hobby shop and procure one ½” foam board ‘” this is all it takes for a 12-18 inch plane.

After you have decided what material to build your own RC plane out of, you will need to design it. There is a lot of vector drawing software on the market today ‘” CorewDraw and InkScape (free) to name a few ‘” and it is pretty simple to do so. After designing your plane, you must draw it on your foam board and cut it out using a jigsaw. If you are using pre-fabricated materials from a kit, this step is not necessary. You should have a body (fuselage), wings and a rudder. If , when you build your own RC plane, you don’t want to do a lot of complex flying, you can replace the rudder with ailerons and an elevator. These are easier to make/attach when you build your own RC plane.

Packing tape or super glue are great ways to hold everything together on your plane; packing tape is good if you’re trying to be quick and is probably a little cheaper. The super glue, on the other hand, will hold better when you build your own RC plane and thus help the plane fly longer after you construct it. Thus, if you would like to build your own RC plane only once and not have to continue to fix it, I would recommend using super glue. You should attach your aileron and elevator to the back of the fuselage of your plane in the grooves you make, after which you should attach the servo to the wing; the servo is essential to maintaining good flight. Doing these things will help you build your own RC plane.

If you are using plastic or balsa wood (of any other material that allows for a hollowed out plane) you can put your motor and radio transmitter inside the fuselage when you build your own RC plane; however, if you use foam to build your own RC plane, you will have to attach the motor and the radio transmitter to the outside of the plane. In this case, the aesthetic appeal of the aircraft will be downgraded when you build your own RC plane.
