Build a Simple Wooden Organizer

Organize Your Life

Everyone is in need of organization. It may be to free up space in your home, garage, or outside, or it may be to get your life in a little bit of order. One of the easiest ways to organize your life is by first organizing your things. If you are a DIYer and you love to work on projects, the perfect project for you could be to build a wooden organizer.

Wooden organizers are both useful and fashionably acceptable in almost any pre-existing design in your home. Stained wood, either a single piece or as a set works well in so many situations, and if not, then a laminate particle board could work wonders also. For the sake of this article we will be working with pine. It is easy to work with and stands up to the test of time.

Wooden organizers come in several forms, from a simple box to a large, multi-spaced, wall shelf. They are easy to build with a few simple tools and will provide you a way to organize your things. To build a very simple wood organizer, you will need the following tools:

Hammer, nails, wood glue, an electric saw (band, jig, or circular), a drill, and collection of bit, a tape measure, a sander or sand paper, stain, and varnish.

A very simple project is a simple wall box. A wall box can be used for any number of things, including car keys, plants, mail, bills, or newspapers. To complete a simple wall box you will need 2 pine boards-1 at 1″ x 12″ x 24″ and another at ¾” x 12″ x 14″. The 1″ thick board will be used as the back piece and for the sides while the ¾” will be for the front and bottom.

The 12″ side of the 1″ board will be the base. Measure up on the 24″ side at least 5″. You can then cut inward in any pattern you choose, but the top should go no more than 18″ total. You will need the rest for the sides. Also, the top center should be sturdy enough to drill at least a ½” diameter hole. This will be for the hanging. A good pattern is available from RunnerDuck at http://www.runnerduck.com/wall-box-pattern.htm

The left and right sides of the box will be cut from the remaining 1″ board with measurements of 5″ x 4 1/2.

The front will be cut from the ¾” board with a measurement of 14″ x 4 ½”.

The bottom must be snug to fit completely inside the box, so the measurements must be 12″ x 4″.

Once the boards are cut, lightly sand the edges and remove any splinters. Now, using both glue and 2 nails per side, connect the sides to the outside of the back so that the back and bottom is flush. The 4 ½” should be height, while the 5″ side is the length.

Now glue and nail the front onto the front of the side pieces again using glue and 2 nails for each side.

The bottom can now be fit into the box, flush with the bottoms of the other pieces. Use a little glue and about 10 nails all the way around-4 in front and back and 2 on each side.

Since the box is now formed, you can give a nice smooth sanding, add the stain, and after it’s dry, add the varnish for protection.

Your box is complete and can now be used for whatever you wish and to bring some of that clutter from up and off your tables or floors. This idea can be used with many different patterns and colors, so experiment with what is best for you.
