Biggest Megachurches in Texas

There’s a saying in Texas that goes “Everything’s bigger in Texas.” The truth of that expression is demonstrated by the Sunday lifestyle of many Texans. A typical Sunday in Texas consist of morning church, football, and evening church. If the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans aren’t playing, then they probably do some more church. Five of the eleven biggest megachurches in the US can be found in Texas. The two biggest megachurches are both in Houston. Here is a list of five of Texas’s biggest megachurches and information regarding each church.

Biggest Megachurches in Texas #5: Woodlands Church (Woodlands, TX) – 16,400
The eleventh biggest church in the US is ministered by Kerry Shook. The mission of Woodland’s Church is to help their members experience Christ and not religion itself. His church can be criticized as being similar to Lakewood Church: A message that lacks theology.

Biggest Megachurches in Texas #4: The Potter’s House (Dallas, TX) – 17,000
The tenth biggest church in the US is ministered by T.D. Jakes. The Potter’s House has become one of the biggest churches in the US and Texas’s biggest for an African American pastor.

The Potter’s House is a nondenominational church. Having only 50 families in 1996, it has expanded into one of America’s fastest growing churches. Similarly to Woodlands Church, his message can rely on the Gospel less than what some conventional Christians would desire.

Biggest Megachurches in Texas #3: Fellowship Church (Grapevine, TX) – 20,000
The seventh biggest church in the US is ministered by Ed Young Jr. He is the son of Ed Young Sr., who has the second largest church in Texas. Fellowship Church’s goal is to teach their members about God, man, eternity, salvation, Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit, Bible, and eternal security. Their main emphasis is providing an entertaining venue of worship for Jesus Christ.

Biggest Megachurches in Texas #2: Second Baptist Church (Houston, TX) – 23,700
The second biggest church in the US is ministered by Ed Young Sr. Similarly to Fellowship Church, the Second Baptist Church’s primary objective is to create an entertaining atmosphere for God’s Word while maintaining the spirit of God’s Word. Second Baptist Church teaches about the fundamentals of Baptism, along with other beliefs from the Bible.

Biggest Megachurches in Texas #1: Lakewood Church (Houston, TX) – 43,500
The biggest church in the US is ministered by Joel Osteen. After relocating into the Houston Rocket’s former arena, Lakewood Church is almost double the size of the second biggest church in America… which also happens to be in Houston, TX.

Lakewood Church believes in the Bible, trinity, water baptism, salvation, communion, and establishing a relationship with Jesus Christ. Lakewood Church takes a psychological approach with interpreting scripture, often leading them to be criticized for preaching a “prosperity gospel.”
