Best Spots for a Romantic Dinner in Los Angeles

Canyons, Los Angeles

St. Valentine’s Day is not the only date on the calendar appropriate for a romantic dinner, but it is very good incentive. While raucous restaurants or hangouts full of regulars may be fun for other days of the year, a quiet hideout might be just the thing for that special dinner for two. Here is a guide to some special locations in the Los Angeles area that make perfect spots to whisper sweet nothings to your table mate.

Beau Rivage in Malibu: Almost an institution in the Malibu area, this distinctive little restaurant sits by itself gazing across the Pacific Coast Highway at the mesmerizing view of the ocean. Owned and operated by Daniel and Luciana Forge, it has been a special occasion destination for nearly 25 years. The menu is Continental with an emphasis on Mediterranean cuisine. Service is proper and leisurely. But you’re not in a hurry, are you? Beau Rivage is located at 26025 Pacific Coast Highway at Corral Canyon, about two miles north of the Pepperdine University campus. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays. Call (310) 456-5733.

Inn of the Seventh Ray in Topanga Canyon: This restaurant is the embodiment of the natural spirit of the legendary Topanga Canyon. A series of eclectic indoor and outdoor dining rooms accommodate a flowing creek. The menu is especially appealing to vegetarians and features organic produce. Open every day (except Christmas) and located at 128 Old Topanga Canyon Road. Call (310) 455-1311.

Saddle Peak Lodge in Calabasas: Teddy Roosevelt could feel at home in this upscale hunting cabin. Constructed of logs and stone and decorated with trophies and antlers, it is the ultimate haute lodge. What Inn of the Seventh Ray is for vegetarians, Saddle Peak Lodge is for meat eaters. The menu specializes in modern preparation of wild game as interpreted by star chefs. It is located at 419 Cold Canyon Road, which is quite a drive at night on some dark roads. Please keep this in mind if you plan to imbibe. Call (818) 222-3888.

One Pico in Santa Monica: This restaurant is located in the oh-so-fabulous Shutters hotel on the sand at Santa Monica beach. In addition to a well-executed varied menu and an impressive wine list, it features a fantastic view of the Santa Monica Pier. The constant parade of activity on the beach path just outside the restaurant’s picture window serves as the floor show. Situated at the western-most end of Pico Boulevard, right next door to the equally fabulous Casa Del Mar hotel. Call (310) 458-0030.

Il Cielo in Beverly Hills: Consistently one of the most romantic restaurants in the city, Il Cielo envelops you with twinkling lights, indoor or outdoor seating, private dining rooms and a seductive Italian menu. This restaurant does not go out of its way to promote itself because those “in the know” book it for special occasions. From the warm fireplace to the hand-painted ceiling, the atmosphere is like having a pair of arms wrapped around you. Located at 9018 Burton Way near the Four Seasons Hotel. Call (310) 276-9990.

Five Crowns in Corona del Mar: Just south of Los Angeles in Corona del Mar is the Five Crowns restaurant which is tailor made for intimate dining. The theme (yes, there is a theme) is 19th century English country manor and the waitresses are dressed in what can only be called serving wench costumes. Five Crowns is a sort of time machine back to the days of low light, highballs, prime rib and banquettes. What’s not to like? Located at 3801 East Pacific Coast Highway. Open every day, call (714) 760-0331.
