When it comes to exercising, Houston has a large amount of running trails available for individuals to start their daily routines. Majority of running trails are also used for walking or biking, so expect a few walkers or bikers around the trails, but with the great scenery these trails provide, it will create an atmosphere like no other. So strap on your running shoes and get ready to have an enjoyable run at one of these amazing trails.


Rice University Trail

Rice University Trail is convenient for students who attend the university or for people who want to find a good trail to run. The 2.9 mile track is enclosed around the campus, sports facilities, and the football stadium, which gives a good scenic route of the university grounds. The actual trail is beautiful to view, as shaded trees and brightly colored flowers are spawned throughout the dirt running path. This will give runners the motivation to fulfill their running duties while also taking in the surroundings around them. Also along the trail are two water fountains and bathroom facilities so runners can take a break and relax.

Herman Park Jogging Trail

For the runners who want to go the extra mile, across the street from Rice University is Hermann Park, which has several trails, including a 2 mile trail around the infamous golf course for runners to enjoy. Hermann Park provides a great atmosphere with shaded trees and various recreation spots to accelerate your mind and keep you exercising with the range of backdrops the park offer. If you want to have a quiet run, keep in mind, this park tends to get really busy really quickly, therefore be aware of crowded trails. There are bathroom stops and water fountains near the lake, but with the actual jogging trail, there are no services available. While running through the blacktop and dirt take a break and go through the Japanese Garden to explore the culture of Japan with this gorgeous garden in the middle of Hermann Park.

Memorial Park

Whether you like to run or walk, Memorial Park is the place to be in terms of the best running trails in the city. The park includes a 3 mile run which goes around the golf course and it provides the perfect setting due to the sheltered trees and immaculate landscape. To extend your run, the trail at Memorial Park extends to Buffalo Bayou, which is an additional 7 miles towards downtown Houston. Words of caution-there are no bathrooms or water fountains around the trails; they are only within the park.


Terry Hershey Park

Located in west Houston, Terry Hershey Park is known for its bike trails, but many people use them for running trails, as they extend from beltway 8 to highway 6 for a total of 8 miles. The entire run is scenic; therefore runners will have a great view. The park also offers an assortment of amenities, including restrooms, water fountains, and showers, and benches to rest. This could be a great trail for a novice to a skilled runner; because it depends on how many miles you want to run.
