Backwoods ‘Honey’ Cigars

Cigars

I love Backwoods Cigars, especially the Sweet Aromatics, for when I’m outdoors and having to rough it a bit. Yes, they are machine-made and won’t be confused with what you’d expect from a fancy Dominican or Honduran smoke. However, when you are out hiking and need to have a cigar that will take absolute punishment, and you won’t cry if they get ruined, then Backwoods are the perfect choice. Don’t try smoking one of these at a restaurant, as you’ll get kicked out for looking like a total hick. But fishermen and hunters know of their fine value. You can get a package of eight of these smallish 6×28 cigars for around $4, and they are sold at plenty of convenience stores.

Its a shame that Backwoods Cigars decided to produce a “honey” blend. This is perhaps the strangest cigar I’ve ever smoked, and while its not as bad as a “Curly Head Deluxe,” its not something I’ll smoke again ever. Even if its free, I will say “thanks, but no thanks.” The cigar is crafted in similar fashion to the rest of their line, and it looks cheap, but withstands all of the elements that can be thrown in its direction. Lighting it is a breeze, and there’s no guillotine cutting required. They are “rough and ready” just like the others, but honey and cigars just don’t translate into an enjoyable experience.

There’s the distinctive flavor of honey, somehow mixed in with the tobacco, and its really an odd pairing. While the flavor isn’t overwhelming, I didn’t like it, and found it a bit too sweet for my taste buds. It’s a fairly mellow smoke, but the sugary taste made me feel like my teeth were going to just rot away. These also have a pungent odor, that stays with you, and there’s no way to get the honey flavor aftertaste to disappear for hours. I did smoke a couple of these, just to make sure I didn’t get a bad one, but the results were the same.

It’s a shame that Backwoods has delivered a poor product, but they’ve failed miserably with the “honey” sticks. If you like really sugary sweet types of cigars, this one might be to your liking, but I’m giving it two thumbs down. While it does have fine lighting abilities, and is a quick smoke, I’ll be giving the rest of them to Winnie the Pooh. These are harder to find than the rest of their line, and I’m guessing its due to other’s disappointment in this particular offering. Unless you are a bee, avoid these like the plague, because I’m simply disgusted by smoking one of these cigars.
