Earlier this year, my cat, Poppy got a tract infection. I was switching jobs and knew I couldn’t afford a hefty vet bill (especially since we had just gotten her fixed and vaccinated.) But, using home remedies, we were able to fix and the problem, leading to a happier cat, and without accidents in the house, happier owners.
PILLS
You don’t need to go to the vet to get medicine. I found pills and bladder control paste at the local grocery store. I followed the directions on both, and haven’t had an accident yet.
But, as an important note : DO NOT FORCE THE CAT TO TAKE THE PILLS. I tried and tried to get Poppy to take her medicine, but she just kept spitting it out. I decided to take a break, and when I came back, the pill was gone. My cat thinks they’re treats as long as I don’t force her into taking them.
MORE WATER
One of the easiest ways to stop tract infections is to give your cat more water. For us, that meant buying one of the water dishes with a water jug on it, so she always has plenty to drink. Another tip is to splurge on bottled water. Since her tract infection, I’ve bought Poppy gallons of bottled water, because sometimes the minerals in tap water that cause hard water can cause a tract infection in your cat. I pay about $.50 per gallon, so spending a dollar per month is much better than dealing with the headaches of her peeing everywhere.
Some people tell you to feed your cat solely wet food, but that gets quite expensive. I’ve found a brand of wet food that my cat really enjoys, and every 2-3 days, I give her a pouch of it. The wetness in the food helps add more liquids to your cats diet, preventing the tract infections.
For those of us who can’t afford to feed our cat solely wet food, almost every cat food company makes a dry food specifically for urinary health. Because my cat is spoiled, we mix it with a few different types of dry cat food, but it’s entirely up to you how much or how little of the specialized food you feed your cat. Keep in mind, the specialized food costs a little bit more. We always buy our cat a big bag of the specialized food for about $5 and two or three boxes of alley cat or friskees food that’s about $2 each.
