God intended to make the beach a relaxing utopia where one can get lost in their thoughts, read a long-ignored novel, and enjoy the sun’s warming embrace. Unless your beach is made of white, powdery sand, throwing a towel down and laying out can actually be a painful experience. The beach closest to me is made mostly of coquina rock, shell shards, and other mild forms of torture. Walking on this composite mixture will often invite gashes and cuts on the soles of the feet. Laying on this sand with only a towel is bumpy and hazardous to one’s back. Reading a good book on nothing more than a towel on the sand will often invite this back pain, which will only show up long after you have left the beach and are attempting to sleep at night.
