What is a headshot?

A headshot is a photograph taken from a little below shoulders up, that portrays an actor or actress in his/her natural state. Your headshot is a 8×10 basic picture of you that captures who you are–your personality, style and look. The headshot is sent as part of your resume to casting directors, directors, producers when you submit for a role in a movie, commercial, theatrical production or television show.

Why do I need a headshot?

For an actor or actress, the headshot is your calling card. When casting directors, producers or directors post a casting call for a part in a television commercial, film, television show or theatrical production, reviewing headshots is their first order of business. The way you present yourself in your headshot is often the determining factor as to your fit for a particular role. Whether you are called in for an audition or not is almost always based first the first impression, your headshot.

What makes a good headshot?

A good headshot should reflect the best version of you in the most natural way possible. Headshots for actors and actresses are not glamor shots or modeling shots. A great headshot will be a well photographed, representation of you. For commercial (commercials) headshots you should smile big but naturally, so that the casting directors can see your teeth. Theatrical (television, film, theater) headshots, should have a more serious tone, with a just a slight smile. Your headshot should be an accurate portrayal of what you look like everyday.

For a good headshot, you may wear makeup in your photograph but keep it to a minimum. Any cosmetics you use should enhance your natural appearance, not alter it. Accessories such as scarves or hats should not be worn in most cases. A small necklace or earrings can be acceptable for an actress, just keep them small and discrete.

In terms of wardrobe for your headshot, try and stay away from bright white. You should style yourself for your headshot based on what type of actor or actress you are and the type of roles you will be auditioning for. For example, if you are a commercial actor or actress you would want to wear a more casual look, i.e. light color top, sweater with white collar shirt underneath etc. For more television, film, theater actors or actresses, a darker shade top in the headshot works well.
