A Step-by-step Guide to Furnishing a Small Studio Apartment

Apartment Decorating, Studio Apartment

Decorating a studio apartment really isn’t more difficult than decorating a bigger apartment if you follow a few simple rules. If you follow the guidelines below, your little pad will be the envy of everyone in your building.

1. The number rule in decorating a small studio apartment is eliminating absolutely everything that you don’t need. That includes little side tables that don’t have a place, artwork that you don’t like, or pieces that you feel take up too much space. Since you will be living in a tiny space, you need to make sure that it looks clean and uncluttered. Work with just the basics first and add things as you go along.

2. Choose your absolute favorite room in a house and base your apartment on that room. For instance, some people love a luxurious bedroom with a big, fluffy bed, soft sheets, and a dramatic comforter. If this sounds like you, then make the focal point of the room your bed. Pretend that your studio is your luxurious bedroom. Of course, since it is almost impossible to live entirely in your bedroom you will need a place to eat, as well. I’m not saying that you can’t have a table and chairs and some other furniture, but emphasizing your bed will really make the room seem elegant. If your favorite room of the house is the living room, why not consider decorating your apartment with the furniture as the focal point and downsizing to a smaller bed.

3. Pretend that there are little walls in your apartment (even though we all know that it’s just a big room) and decorate with those imaginary walls in mind. For example, why not have a separate little dining room, a separate kitchen area, and a little living room? As long as you don’t divide the spaces up to small, this is a good way to make sense of the space you have.

4. Use book shelves and other storage devices. Book shelves are great to decorate with because they hold all of your treasures in addition to dividing up a space. Check out Ikea for book shelves that practically look like walls. If you get low enough shelving, you can put cushions on top to create the feeling of a built-in. Try to decorate with multi-functional furniture, such as a bookshelf that functions as a room divider, a coffee table that is also for storage, and a bench that you can place CDs, books, and records in. Using versatile pieces of furniture will make it much easier for you to decorate with fewer pieces and also eliminate clutter.

5. Finally, have fun living in one room! Remember, it takes some people days to clean their entire house but it may take you only an hour to clean your studio apartment, bathroom included! Your studio apartment will also be very easy to redecorate whenever the mood strikes. Sometimes, all it will take is changing the color of the comforter or the curtains. The best part about living in a studio: no roommates!
