Whimsical feather earrings are quickly becoming one of the hottest trends in jewelry fashion. After a decade of flashy ‘bling’ and over sized chandelier earrings, jewelry designers are slowly returning to simpler, ‘earthy’ styles for the new decade. Here is a style guide for fashion savvy ladies on what types of outfits look best with feather earrings.
Keep it Simple
Feather earrings look best when worn with a casual, low key outfit. Simple t-shirts and tank tops, paired with jeans or a denim skirt are perfect for accenting with feather earrings. Layer your t-shirt or tanks with colors to match the earrings. For instance, if you have a pair of feather earrings that are brown and green, mix and match your tops in brown and green shades. If you have a pair of feather earrings that are a bright, neon color, mix and match tops that are the same color as your earrings with black or white. One of my favorite outfits to wear with my hot pink feather earrings is a plain black t-shirt over a hot pink camisole, with a pair of skinny jeans. Play mix and match with your tops to see what looks best.
Dresses and Tunics
Nothing can dress up a simple tunic in an understated way like a pair of pretty feather earrings. If your earrings are earth tones such as brown, white, gray, or coral, stick with simple cotton dresses in basic earth colors. For instance, a pair of pretty snowy white feathers look fantastic with a sky blue dress, and coral feathers would look perfect with a brown dress. The same rule also applies for funkier colors. Make sure the color of your dress is in the same family of colors as your earrings. I personally like to wear the funkier colored earrings with a basic black or white dress, since those are fashion color staples and there is no need to worry about color clashing. Black or white is also better if you want to draw attention to your earrings, as they will stand out better.
A popular earring style this season are peacock feathers. When I purchased my first pair, I could not for the life of me figure out what to wear with them. At first I just wore them with a black t-shirt and jeans, but since I consider peacock feathers to be fancier than regular feathers, I decided to take it up a notch. When wearing a pair of peacock feathers, go for outfits that are made out of fancier materials such as chiffon or nylon. Peacock feathers are the perfect thing to wear for a special occasion, and look fantastic with dressier outfits. Try to find clothes that are the same shade of blue or green as the peacock feathers. This creates a vibrant, dramatic effect and will definitely make you stand out in a good way.
Hairstyles
I know this may sound silly, but when wearing feather earrings of any kind, make sure your hair is fixed in a certain way. The reason I say this is because feathers are so light and airy, they tend to get stuck in your hair if it is worn down. Pull your hair back in a ponytail, or a headband to keep your hair off of your face and away from the earrings. A cute style that I like to wear is a headband that matches the color of the earrings (and outfit) I am wearing, with my hair twisted up in a hair claw. This is a great, stylish way to keep the hair out of my face and to draw attention to my pretty earrings. Twin braids also look really cute if you are going for a hippie, ‘Earth Girl’ style.
