A Buyer’s Guide on Where to Buy Sod

The advantages of purchasing grass sod for your lawn is often overlooked due to pricing concerns. But if investigated thoroughly, you will be able to find sod at a lesser cost than you might think.

Sod is usually grown over 2 years and cut directly from the soil in which it was grown, either in squares or rolls. It is very quick and easy to place or roll sod out and have an instant lawn.

Depending on the region, climate, type of year and type of sod, it is difficult to get an exact pricing, however, sod will typically cost anywhere from as little as 15 cents up to 60 cents per square foot.

Retail stores will also be typically higher than visiting your local nursery where you can sometimes purchase sod at wholesale prices.

WHERE TO BUY SOD

  1. Visit your local nursery first. You will most likely find a better quality sod for a better price than retail. Most nurseries offer delivery after a certain amount is purchased. They will be knowledgeable about the best sod to plant for your area.
  2. Wal-Mart-large discount chain-Usually has small quantities of sod available in early spring. Does not have as wide a selection of varieties. Usually carries Bermuda and st. Augustine.
  3. Lowe’s-large home improvement chain-Carries larger quantities and varieties. The sod is better taken care of than Wal-Mart. Prices will be slightly higher than Wal-Mart. Lowe’s will also have someone help you decide on the amount you need and can deliver.
  4. Home Depot-large home improvement chain-Home Depot also carries sod in the spring. They will carry about the same quantities and varieties. Pricing will be competitive to Lowe’s.
