Clubs for Senior Citizens in New York

Active Seniors, Senior Citizens, Senior Citizens Homes, Senior Trip

Senior Citizens clubs offer a wide variety of services and social activities, some geared just for Senior Citizens and some encompassing different age groups. These Senior Citizen clubs receive their funding from such organizations as New York City Department for the Aging. Many of them may be associate with a religious organization, but are open for all senior citizens.

They offer a wide range of service to both active seniors such as trips. opportunities for the senior citizens to volunteer their time to help others and social gatherings and seniors who are homebound such as meal on wheels.

Senior Citizens need to have places like this to keep them active, alert and productive. Senior Citizens have a lot to contribute to the community and these clubs give them an opportunity to do as well as just come an have a good time. If none of these are convenient for you, contact your local YMCA OR YMHA, or Salvation Army Center. These organizations have programs and there may be one in the center near you. Also contact local churches as many of them have senior citizen clubs. The ones listed here will giver you a good overview of the types of programs that you will find.

The Stanley M. Isaacs Senior Center provides services for low income seniors in Yorkville and Harlem but welcomes seniors from around the city. Five days a week they serve breakfast and lunch and lunch on Saturday. They also have a meals on wheels program, provide services such as psychiatric and legal and have many things for active seniors such as volunteer opportunities. This club is for seniors 60 and over.

The program for senior citizens 60 and over at the 92st Y will keep them involved and active. The 60 plus program receives funding from private foundations mostly and from other sources such as the Manhattan Borough President’s Office.

They have lecture series, book discussion groups, lessons in such diverse subjects as yoga, acting, creative writing and all things computer related. They also have their own chamber orchestra made up from their 60 plus club members

The program for senior citizens at Goddard Riverside Community Center is open to anyone over 60 and is free. They serve breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday and here the senior citizens are involved in running the center along with the staff. They have classes in art, exercise, choir and Spanish. They even have a greenhouse and garden where the senior citizens works side by side with members from the other programs at the center. Fo homebound senior citizens, they have volunteers who will make a phone call every day to check on their well being and sometimes just to say hello and be there to listen.

They have many things going on just for senior citizens. Most are free, some have charges for non members and some have charges for both non members and members alike. They host many intense discussion groups on social and political issues, social activities, a card and game room and trips like a guided tour of Gracie Mansion, the home of New York City’s Mayors.
