Small storage boxes are a wonderful way to add extra space to your home office. Fill this sassy and chic animal print storage box with pens, paper clips, note paper, corrective fluid and other small sized supplies.
For this project, you will need:
– One unfinished cigar style wooden box (available at craft supply stores)
– Medium grit sandpaper
– Tack cloth or other soft cloth
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
– Krylon Make It Suede Paint in Buckskin
– Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray
– Animal print scrapbook paper
– Red cardstock
– Fancy script wording stencil
– Ruler
– Pencil
– Craft knife
– Self healing mat
– Sponge brush
– Mod Podge or other decoupage medium
– Sponge brush
– Xyron machine fitted with a double sided adhesive cartridge
– Shallow pan
– Red glitter
– Hot glue gun and glue sticks
– Newspaper
For easier cleanup, first cover your work area with a few layers of old newspaper. Sand the unfinished cigar style wooden box with medium grit sandpaper. Use a tack cloth or other soft cloth to wipe away any dust accumulated on the surface of the wood after the sanding process. Spray the entire outside of the box with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Let the box dry for an hour before adding a second coat. Dry for three to four hours.
Spray the outside of the box with an even coat of Krylon Make It Suede Paint in Buckskin. Let the box set for three to four hours before applying a second coat. Allow the box to dry overnight before proceeding.
Place a sheet of animal print scrapbook paper flat on a self healing mat. Use the ruler to measure a size that is one half inch all around than the lid of the box. Mark this measurement on the paper in pencil. Cut out the shape with a craft knife.
Apply a generous amount of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to the lid of the box with a sponge brush. Let the glue dry completely. With the sponge brush, coat the back of the animal print paper in decoupage medium. Immediately press the paper to the center of the box lid, leaving the border of empty space around the paper. Smooth with your fingertips to prevent any wrinkling. Dry completely.
Set the red cardstock flat on the self healing mat. In pencil, trace a few fancy script words. (This can be “supplies”, a name, a monogram, etc.) Cut out the words with a craft knife. Run the cardstock through an Xyron machine fitted with a double sided adhesive cartridge. Remove the top layer of protective sheeting from the paper piece.
Set the wording into the shallow pan and sprinkle generously with red glitter. Shake off any excess. Heat up the hot glue gun. Remove the back protective sheeting from the wording. Add a dab of hot glue to the back of the words and adhere to the cigar box lid. Let the glue dry completely. Spray the entire project with a layer of Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray. Let the box dry overnight before using.
