What Plants or Flowers Mean Love?

If someone asked you what flowers are you supposed to send to someone they love, what would be your answer? Most people would answer – Roses. While roses would be a good answer, it is far from the only answer. There are at least 33 varieties of flowers, including 5 types of roses that have some sort of love related meaning.

The 33 varieties of flowers are Ambrosia, Apricot Blossom, Arbutus, Aster, Bouquet of Withered, White Carnation, Red Chrysanthemum, Cinnamon, Coltsfoot, Daisy, Dandelion, Forget-Me-Not, Gardenia, Gloxinia, Heliotrope, White Hyacinth, Ivy, Jonquil, Mauve and White Lilac, marvel-of-Peru, Mistletoe, Myrtle, Orange Blossom, Orchid, Primrose, Smilax and Tulip and Red Tulip. The roses are Bridal Rose, Carolina Rose, Pink Rose, Red Rose and a combination Pink and White Rose.

Ambrosia has lobed leaves with greenish-yellow spikes and prickly protrusions.

Apricot Blossom has pink or white flowers and heart-shaped glossy leaves.

Arbutus has evergreen leaves and clusters of white or pink flowers.

Aster has flower heads with white, pink or violet rays surrounding a yellow disk.

White Carnation has a showy white fragrant flower with fringed petals.

Red Chrysanthemum has large red flowers with petals that either curve up and in or down and out or are pompon or spider shaped.

Cinnamon plants have small white flowers with foliage that begins out deep red in color and turns green when it is mature.

Coltsfoot has star-like flowers that are golden in color and broad sea-green leaves. These flowers and leaves do not appear on the plant at the same time.

Columbine has rosette leaves that are maroon colored in the fall with flowers that have five spurred petals that are located above 5 petal-like sepals. These flowers can be blue, white, yellow, red or pink.

Daffodil flowers have a tubular center that is set on a star-shaped background of petals.

This trumpet is usually a contrasting color from the background petals. Daffodils can be yellow or white.

Daisy flowers come in a rainbow of colors, the most popular have a yellow disk or center and pink or white rays. This center resembles a pompon.

Dandelion flowers have many rays with deeply notched basal leaves and are brilliant to vivid yellow.

Forget-Me-Not flowers are clusters of small blue flowers having five petals. They are also pink and white.

Gardenia flowers are either solitary or they are small clusters and are either white or a very pale yellow. These flowers have a tubular-bases corolla with between five and twelve lobe petals that range in size from five to twelve centimeters in diameter.

Gloxinia flowers are various colors of bell shaped flowers that grow in clusters. The petals of these flowers may be solid, spotted or marbled.

Heliotrope flowers are either white, pale lavender or deep purple and have a vanilla fragrance.

White Hyacinth flowers are small clusters of bell shaped florets that are on a four to six inch inflorescence that have a strong, pleasant fragrance.

Ivy is a solid green or variegated evergreen vine that climbs or trails and has palmately lobed leaves.

Jonquil flowers are bright yellow, the size of a quarter and fragrant with a trumpet center that is only one quarter as long as the petals of the flower.

Mauve and White Lilac flowers are five to ten millimeters in diameter, grow in large panicles and have a four lobe corolla with a narrow corolla tube that is five to twenty millimeters long.

Marvel-of-Peru or Four O’Clocks flowers are pink, red, bright yellow, white or almost white and even two toned. These flowers are trumpet shaped and the foliage is smooth.

Mistletoe flowers are either solitary or clusters and are located in the leaf axils or at the end of branches. They are usually radially symmetrical in form and will have only two to three petals.

Myrtle flowers are white with a several prominent stamens that protrude from the disk or center of the flower and are fragrant as is the leaves of this plant.

Orange blossoms are white with five long petals and are fragrant.

Orchid flowers come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. They are also fragrant.

Primrose flowers are bold yellow, red, pink or blue and each flower is on its own flower stalk that comes from the center of the plant. These flowers have a green-tubed calyx with a pale yellow corolla that is made up of five petals that are joined to the tube below and spreads to the flower disk above.

Smilax flowers are clusters of white and green and they have thorns.

Tulip flowers are cup shaped and usually only have three petals and three sepals and are on their own stem, although occasionally there are up to four flowers per stem. They are available in all colors except blue.

Roses have five petals and five sepals that are each attached to a receptacle that is attached to a stem. This creates a cup shape. These petals are large, broad and obovate with a notch-like indention on the top.
