How to Style Fine, Limp Hair

Hair Volume, Limp Hair, Serums

I wasted years and countless dollars trying to conquer my hair before I discovered the secrets to successfully styling fine hair. A bit of trial and error and the guidance of friendly, knowledgeable stylist helped me immensely. Save time, money and frustration by using these simple tips to tame unruly tresses.

How to Revive Fine, Limp Hair: Find a hairstyle that suits your hair type.
Although I would like to tear a page from a magazine and ask for the same haircut, my hair is not receptive to certain styles. Facing this simple reality check will save you the heartache of waiting for the wrong haircut to grow out. My hair does best with a careful bit of layering. The layers add movement and give my hair a lighter feel and appearance. Too many layers, however, make my hair look fine and limp beyond repair.

How to Revive Fine, Limp Hair: Stick with the same stylist.
It usually takes one or two haircuts for a new stylist to get used to my hair’s natural tendencies. Returning to the same stylist eliminates this learning period and means I get the right kind of style every time.

How to Revive Fine, Limp Hair: Avoid pin-straight styles.
Straight hair can easily turn flat and cling to the scalp. Define straight hair with a bit of shape. Use a curling iron to curl the ends of hair or rollers to volumize the roots.

A hair straightener also works well for me. I lift my hair away from my scalp as I glide the straightener across each section. After I am done straightening my hair, I go back over the ends and angle the hair upwards to add some shape and a slight curl.

How to Revive Fine, Limp Hair: Cut the oil.
Oil weighs the roots down and travels down the strand making the rest of the hair fall. A good shampoo will improve the condition of the scalp and cut the oil. Clarifying shampoo is too harsh for regular use and compounds the issue. The Aussie Cleanse and Mend shampoo works well for my hair. This shampoo simultaneously cuts the oil and moisturizers hair.

How to Revive Fine, Limp Hair: Boost your hair’s volume.
The root booster serums and sprays do not work for me. I use other methods to boost my hair’s volume. The easiest technique is to use a round brush and hair dryer on damp hair. A blow out shapes and smooths hair without weighing it down. Using large hot rollers at the roots also adds volume.

How to Revive Fine, Limp Hair: Use the right products.
Hair care does not have to be expensive; however, it is imperative to choose the right products for your hair. A good stylist should be able to offer personalized suggestions. In my case, most of the anti-frizz products and serums are too heavy for my hair. Knowing which products to avoid, switching shampoos and conditioning only once a week immediately improved the appearance of my hair.

As you may have noticed, I did not recommend any expensive hair care products. That is because a pricey product is not the solution to styling woes. The right haircut is the foundation of a good style. A good haircut makes hair behave and gives each strand direction. The other methods will improve fine hair, but they are most effective when used on hair with the right haircut.
