How to Backup Wii and Gamecube Games

I just bought a Wii and at the price of the system, controllers, and then the additional games I don’t want any of my games to crap out just because it has scratches on the surface. So I backup all of my games so that if it happens I am protected, but keep in mind if you want to play backed-up games you must have a modified Wii console. The normal Wii will not allow you to play burned games without the Wiikey. You can get a Wiikey here (www.wiikey.cn).

So if you either have your system modified or planning on it then we can continue in our process of backing up our Wii games. First you will need some equipment that is required and I know it sounds weird but you will need a CD/DVD combo drive (not a burner, this drive is just for reading the game and ripping it to your hard drive) that is one of these models.

LG-8163b or LG-8162b

This is the one I have been using and it has been working great. I am not saying other drives won’t work but many people have said that their drives don’t work and the drives listed above have proven they work and they are cheap.

After you have your drive bought and installed then you will need some software that you can easily download. Get these two software programs:

Raw Dump 2.0 (http://rapidshare.com/files/25002998/rawdump2.0.rar)

.Net Framework 2.0 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang;=en)

I then use WinRAR to unzip the files but WinZip or another Zip program will work just as well if you don’t have any of these then get

WinRAR here (http://rarlabs.com/rar/wrar37b3.exe)

Once you have WinRAR installed then you will want to right-click on Raw Dump and choose extract to “Extract to rawdump2.0” this should make a folder on your desktop called rawdump2.0.

Now put in your Wii or Gamecube game into the Drive (the one you bought from the list above) and open the Rawdump folder and double click the Rawdump.exe.

You will get an interface window which will guide you through the process of ripping the game to your computer. Click the Start Dump, ignore all of the other buttons, the dump can take some time so go take a break my computer took almost 3 hours and my older computer took 5 hours so this could be awhile depending on your machines hardware. When it is done it will give you a little message letting you know, the file it makes will be in the same folder as the rawdump.exe. The game should be a file called “”name.iso”” where name is the name of the game, this is ready to be burned to the disk, you can use any program you want but I have Nero and it works so I will tell you how to use that program.

Before you actually burn your ISO file you will want to check and make sure it’s the right size Wii games should be 4.37GB (4, 699,979,776 bytes) and Gamecube games should be 1.35GB (1,459,978,240 bytes) if the Wii games aren’t the exact size then re-dump the files.

Ok so if you get the right ISO size then we can continue on to Nero. First open Nero and exit to the main window, choose the Recorder option and go down to Burn Image. Now all you have to do is locate the image and open it, it will be located in your Rawdump folder. Once you have the game selected click the open button and then you get an options window to setup your burning process. Many people recommend burning at a slow rate but I haven’t had an issue with burn speeds, I do recommend buying good DVD media, Taiyo Yuden seems to be the best DVD media get some here (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817294007).

Once you’re done burning then you can try out your game on your Modified Wii. Now just to clear some things up you need the LG drive to Rip the files from your Wii or Gamecube game, once you have them Ripped with that drive you can use ANY DVD drive to burn the files.
