Dilantin is a seizure medication, also known as an anti-epileptic and anticonvulsant. Seizures is your body’s reaction to abnormal brain electrical responses. This drug slows down the brain’s impulses with the result of fewer or no seizures. It can also be used in other ways, such as in the use of relieving pain from nerves. Persons taking Dilantin should carry an ID card or bracelet that states so in case of emergency.
Dilantin, generic name Phenytoin, should be used cautiously by those who have kidney or liver disease, porphyria, diabetes, a vitamin D deficiency or any other condition that causes thinning of the bones. People with these conditions will generally receive special testing during treatment or possibly dosage adjustments. People with diabetes will need to keep a close check on their blood sugar level while taking Dilantin as it possibly will lower the blood sugar.
Pregnancy while taking Dilantin is not recommended as Dilantin can be harmful to an unborn fetus. If an unexpected pregnancy occurs while on Dilantin, it is important to let the doctor know. Also, Dilantin can be passed from a nursing mother to the baby through the breast milk. This also can harm the baby.
Hormonal forms of birth control is not as effective when combined with Dilantin. Therefore, using alternative methods such as a condom or a diaphragm combined with spermicidal is the ideal method of birth control. So it is very important to talk with the doctor about family planning issues.
Dilantin comes in several forms. The oral suspension should be shook vigorously just before measuring, and should be poured into a marked cup or spoon- not a plain table spoon. The pharmacist or doctor will provide one if asked nicely. A chewable Dilantin tablet may be crushed or chewed, or may even be swallowed whole. A capsule or tablet should never be broken, chewed, opened, or crushed. These must be swallowed whole as they are made to be released into the body over an amount of time.
Dilantin needs to be stored away from heat and moisture. If the Dilantin capsules or tablets become discolored, discontinue taking them and get a fresh batch.
Dilantin should be taken with food to prevent stomach upset. If a dose is missed, and it is taken more than once a day, it is alright to skip the missed dose and take the next dose on time. If however, the dose is taken only once a day, then take it as soon as it is remembered in the same day. Do not take two doses at the same time! Signs of an overdose are blurred vision, staggering walk, behavior or mood changes, severe dizziness or drowsiness, and confusion. If doses are missed for two days in a row, call a physician immediately. An abrupt change in dosage, even accidental, can cause seizures.
Also, it is important to take care of the teeth and gums while using this medication. It is recommended to have a dental cleaning and exam every three months while taking Dilantin.
Do not drink alcohol while taking Dilantin. There is several medications that should not be used while taking Dilantin. Antacids and Vitamin D is only a couple minor examples. Be sure to let the doctor and the pharmacist know exactly what over the counter medications and herbs you use.
Some serious side effects of Dilantin include swollen glands, hallucinations, strange thoughts or behavior, sore throat with severe rash, slurred speech, loss of balance, urinating more than usual, and bleeding gums. Some minor side effects include insomnia, headaches, or twitching.
