Every year during the Major League baseball season there begin to be talks of a triple crown. Sports fans may be lost when announcers and analysts start to talk about a triple crown and don’t understand what it is. The Triple Crown is given to batters and pitchers that have dominated for an entire season and finish the year first in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in. For pitcher’s they must finish first in wins, earned run average, and strikeouts. Here is a list of the past 10 Triple Crown batting winners.
1. Carl Yastrzenski- Carl was the last to win the Triple Crown as a player for the Boston Red Sox in 1967. Carl finished with 44 home runs, 121 runs batted in and a .326 batting average.
2. Frank Robinson- Robinson had a dominating season with the Baltimore Orioles in 1966. Robinson finished the 1966 season with 49 home runs, 122 runs batted in, and a .316 batting average.
3. Mickey Mantle- Mantle played for the New York Yankees during the 1956 season. Mantle finished the season with 52 home runs, 130 runs batted in, and a .353 batting average.
4. Ted Williams- Williams had a great season in 1947 winning the Triple Crown. Williams hit 32 home runs, 114 runs batted in, and a .343 batting average for the season.
5. Ted Williams- Williams won another Triple Crown in 1942 also with the Boston Red Sox. Williams hit 36 home runs, had 137 runs batted in, and a .356 batting average to take home his first Triple Crown.
6. Joe Medwick- Medwick had a great season with the St. Louis Cardinals during the 1937 season winning the Triple Crown. Medwick finished the season with 31 home runs, 154 runs batted in, and a .374 batting average.
7. Lou Gehrig- Gehrig hit for the Triple Crown as a member of the New York Yankees during the 1934 season. Gehrig finished the year with 49 home runs, 165 runs batted in, and a .363 batting average for the season.
8. Jimmie Foxx- Foxx won the Triple Crown for the American League in 1933 while Chuck Klein won the Triple Crown for the National League during the same season. Foxx finished the year with 48 home runs, 163 runs batted in, and a .356 batting average for the Philadelphia Athletics.
9. Chuck Klein- Klein hit for the Triple Crown opposite Foxx in the National league for the Philadelphia Phillies during the 1933 season. Klein finished the season with 28 home runs, 120 runs batted in, and a .368 batting average.
10. Rogers Hornsby- Rogers is 10th on the list and won the Triple Crown during 1925 for St. Louis. Rogers finished the season with 39 home runs, 143 runs batted in, and a .403 batting average for the season.
