Willy Wonka Themed Activities and Games for Families

Candy Making, Willy Wonka

Are you working on organizing a Willy Wonka themed shindig? Do you need some help coming up with a handful of party games and activities? If so, feel free to use one of mine. Here they are:

Candy Making Activity

In my opinion, a candy making activity should definitely be a part of every Willy Wonka themed fete. After all, we are talking Wonka here folks. Thankfully, there is a wide array of candy making activities that would work with assorted age groups. For example, you could engage the younger children in an old-fashioned taffy pull or a marzipan sculpture contest. The older children could help to create candied fruits, sugared flowers, flavored sugars or lollipops. There are even candy molds available that will help the tweens and teens make filled candies like cordial cherries and peppermint creams. You can generally purchase everything needed to make the confections through specialty retailers and craft stores.

Old Fashioned Soda Making Activity

Do you remember the scenes in the movie connected to Willy Wonka’s soda making activities? Well why not incorporate that into your party as well. For instance, you could let the kids make their own sodas. There are many different websites that offer instructions on making homemade soda and seltzer water. Some are more complicated than others. I’d suggest letting the kids make old-fashioned egg creams like they use to serve in New York. As a former New Yorker, I typically make my egg creams with chocolate milk and seltzer water. Of course you could also let the kids make other varieties of fountain drinks with malted milk, strawberry milk and other flavored syrups.

Candy Wreaths and Candy Stained Glass

Letting the kids engage in a candy related craft would also work as a Willy Wonka themed activity. There are many different candy crafts to choose from. One of the easiest is to give the kids a Styrofoam wreath form, a hot glue gun, glue sticks and a big bag of individually wrapped hard candy. Then let them decorate the wreath form with the candies.

Another craft worth mentioning is making candy stained glass. My siblings and I use to make it when we were kids. In order to complete the craft, you’ll need a bunch of Life Savers hard candy, metal cookie cutters, aluminum foil, non-stick cooking spray and a cookie sheet. Simply cover the bottoms of the cookie cutters with aluminum foil and then spray them with non-stick cooking spray. Proceed by placing the treated cookie cutters onto a cookie sheet and filling their recesses with broken pieces of Life Savers.

Next, place the cookie sheet into a preheated, 350 degree Fahrenheit oven and let the candies melt completely. Afterward, remove the cookie sheet from the oven and let the melted candy cool. Once it has cooled, carefully remove the candies from the cookie cutters. The end result is called candy stained glass.
