6 Fun Typing Games for Kids

Games for Girls, Games for Kids, Typing

The following keyboarding games are the best of the best of those that can be played online for free. These fun typing games for kids will keep children so engaged and entertained that they won’t even realize they’re practicing their typing!

Some of the games listed here can be set for any skill level, from beginner to expert. Others are intended just for a particular skill level. This list starts with the games most appropriate for beginners and ends with the best games designed for kids whose typing skills are more advanced. Happy typing!

Key Seeker: This jungle-themed game is intended for children who are just learning their letters. It presents one letter at a time, along with a fun animated graphic that corresponds to the letter. The letters are color-coded purple or green to help kids start learning which hand is used to strike which keys. Audio instructions make it easy for little ones to learn this simple (but fun!) game.

Super Hyper Typer Spider: With Easy, Medium, and Hard settings, this game is appropriate for any skill level, and boy is it fun! Colorful cartoon lizards crawl along branches toward Berry the spider, and you must type the letters or words on the lizards to hold them back. On Easy, only a single letter appears on each lizard’s back. On Medium, the lizards are sporting short words. On Hard, the words are longer. As you move through the levels, the lizards start crawling faster and new challenges arise to keep you on your toes!

Keyboard Revolution: Fans of games like Guitar Hero or Dance Dance Revolution will love this fun typing game. It has Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced skill settings, so this one is also appropriate for any skill level. You can also customize which keys will show up in the game, whether you want to focus on home row keys, numbers, just one hand, or practically any other combination. Choose a dancer (ballerina, duck, etc.) and one of 14 songs, then hit the right key at the right time to make the character dance and try for a high score.

Word Frenzy
: This one is best for kids whose typing skills are at an intermediate level or higher. You play one of two characters, and the character you don’t choose will chase you around the world. You must type the words that appear on the screen; the faster you type, the faster your character moves. The game starts out with short words, but it is fast paced. The graphics are visually stunning, but if your character is caught, it dies a bloody cartoon death (parents and caretakers be warned).

Fowl Words
: In addition to practicing their typing skills, kids who play this one will work their minds to spell words from a given list of letters. It’s somewhat similar to Boggle, the popular non-computer game, except that the letters can be used in any combination. Come up with a certain number of words within the given amount of time to pass each level. Kids who enjoy spelling and word games will love this one. And don’t worry, “fowl words” is just a pun; the game features a row of clucking hens!

Clockwords
: This game is a bit more complex and ideal for older kids who would get bored with less exciting games. You play a genius inventor whose lab has been invaded by mechanical insects that are trying to steal the secrets of your work. The main game play involves thinking up words and typing them as fast as you can, but there is a lot more to this one. It has a fun story and great graphics, and there is strategy involved. Kids will get so absorbed that they won’t even realize they’re practicing their typing!
