5 Skin Care Tips for Dry Skin

Skin care tips for dry skin are designed to remove dead skin and add moisture. Dry skin is caused by a number of factors, including dehydration, heredity, spending too much time in the sun, incorrect skin care products and more. I’m African American, and it is not uncommon for African Americans to suffer from dry skin. If you are a healthy individual who suffers from dry skin, these five skin care tips for dry skin are easy, mostly inexpensive, and will improve the appearance and feel of your skin.

1. Drink eight glasses of water a day

One of the major causes of dry skin is dehydration, and many people fail to drink enough water. It’s important to drink eight glasses of water a day or to stay rehydrated. Says Dr. Tom Higgins, “It’s tough to say in general everybody should drink eight glasses of water a day. The bottom line is you need to stay rehydrated.”

In addition, make sure your water is filtered, because most water out of the tap is polluted. Water filtration varies from pitchers to filters that you can install.

2. Exfoliate

When you exfoliate your skin you remove dead skin to reveal fresh, new skin. The number one exfoliation treatment that I recommend for dry skin is coffee grounds. Coffee grounds not only remove dead skin, but they contain antioxidants that are good for the skin. Use a good source of coffee and save your coffee grounds. Keep them in an air-tight container. In the shower, rub the coffee grounds all over your body. Do not use on skin that is damaged or infected. Let the grounds go down the drain. It’s messy, but the grounds should not clog your drain, and you can rinse your shower after you’re done. Exfoliate at least once or twice a week.

3. Vaseline

One of the five skin care tips for dry skin that I recommend is Vaseline. There’s a reason African American supermodel Tyra Banks loves this product. It’s great for dry skin. “At night I use Vaseline everywhere: under my eyes, and on my laugh lines, lips and elbows. I swear by the stuff!”

I use Vaseline as a night cream. Smooth it on at night and you will wake up to softer skin. For dry feet, spread it on your feet, concentrating on your heel and other dry areas. Cover your feet with socks, and when you wake up your feet will look and feel better.

4. Tinted Moisture

Foundation and powder can get heavy and drying when your facial skin is dry. Purchase a tinted moisture with SPF instead. I use Cover Girl Smoothers. It softens, gives my face a natural tint and has SPF 15. It comes in various shades, and it’s affordable.

5. Body Lotion

Buy a good body lotion and use it daily on your dry skin. I like Lubriderm, Eucerin or Gold Bond. If you prefer a natural product, try any of the body lotions by Burt’s Bees. A good body lotion is one of the five skin care tips for dry skin that I never pass up.
