5 Notable April 18 Birthdays and Historical Events in World History

James Woods, Mama's Family

5 of my notable April 18 birthdays and historical events in world history include the opening of one of sport’s most famous stadiums! These 5 notable April 18 birthdays and historical events in world history include the birthdates of two talented actors, born the same year! Here they are, 5 notable April 18 birthdays and historical events in world history. How special is April 18 to you, or is it just another day?

5 Notable April 18 Birthdays and Historical Events in World History Selection Number 1: St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City has its cornerstone laid in 1506.

I’ve had the privilege of seeing St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City twice in my lifetime and touring some of the inside once. It’s one of the most beautifully-constructed things I’ve ever seen, and it’s so big on the inside, I just couldn’t get over it. Vatican City is its own country, but did you know that there’s another area inside the city of Rome that’s regarded as a “foreign country” by some, which you can read more about at my Associated Content article about Rome’s less publicized but can’t miss attractions!

5 Notable April 18 Birthdays and Historical Events in World History Selection Number 2: The birth of Dorothy Lyman in 1947.

Mama’s Family is one of my favorite situation comedies, thanks in part to the role that Lyman played as Naomi, the flusey-acting wife of Thelma “Mama” Harper’s son Vinton. She was often at odds with ol’ Mama, and we fans got to see her in action a lot at her job of checking groceries. Yet I remember Lyman from All My Children, which I used to watch a lot of her early antics and scheming when I was a kid. Lyman was the first to play the woman who came from the wrong side of the tracks Opal Sue Gardner. This April 18 birthdays and historical events in world history choice stands out because quality acting does add to society! Soap operas have some awesome theme songs, which you can read about my top 5 at this Associated Content article.

5 Notable April 18 Birthdays and Historical Events in World History Selection Number 3: The American Revolution “begins” with Paul Revere’s ride in 1775 and “ends” in 1783 with General Washington’s orders to the Continental Army to quit fighting.

While historians may dispute my official “beginning” and “end” events, it’s true that Paul Revere’s famous ride did begin on April 18, but he was not alone in declaring that the British were coming, as William Dawes gets only a fraction of credit and glory that ol’ Paul got for his gallant role in not only American history, but world history, according to The Patriot Resource.

And as for April 18, 1783 being the “end” of the Revolutionary War and one of the notable April 18 birthdays and historical events in world history, it was this day when General Washington gave out the General Orders to our nation’s army that they were no longer at war with the British according to The Library of Congress.

5 Notable April 18 Birthdays and Historical Events in World History Selection Number 4: The birth of James Woods in 1947.

Like Dorothy Lyman, James Woods was not only born on April 18, but the very same year. I have two favorite acting roles by Woods. He brilliantly played gangster Maximilian “Max” Bercowicz (and later emerged as the “respectable” Secretary of Commerce Christopher Bailey) in one of my favorite movies called Once Upon A Time In America (1984) – pulling off one wail of a scheme on Robert De Niro! He also did one heck of a job in playing a salesman named Lenny Brown who turns to drugs in the troubling but riveting movie with Sean Young from 1988 called The Boost. To watch Lenny’s demise is gut-wrenching!

5 Notable April 18 Birthdays and Historical Events in World History Selection Number 5: Babe Ruth hits a home run during the first ever home opener at Yankee Stadium in 1923.

The New York Yankees are my favorite sports team, hands down, even though I abhor their lavish spending on players! So many great thrills have been provided for me thanks to this team and their legendary old home whose opening is one of my 5 notable April 18 birthdays and historical events in world history. I became a fan of the New York Yankees in 1977, as they captured the World Series title thanks to 3 home runs in Game 6 by Reggie Jackson, my favorite all-time baseball player. But the years without World Championships are always tough, especially from 1979-1995 and since 2001. I never got to see a game at the Old Yankee Stadium, but in December 2002, I spent a weekend in New York, and my friend and I took a subway to The Bronx, and I at least got to see some of Yankee Stadium from the outside on a cold winter’s day.
