5 Great Films from the 1990s to Watch with the Kids

101 Dalmatians, 1990s, Dalmatians, Holiday Ham, John Lasseter

Are you planning on spending the weekend watching old films with the kids? Have you already decided on which movies will make it onto your television screen? If not, you may want to check out my list of favorite family flicks from the 1990s. Here they are:

“Beauty and the Beast” (1991)

Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is just one film that my children enjoyed from the 1990s. Perhaps best of all, it is being re-released in January 2013 in 3D. Therefore, you could also take the kids out to your local cinema to watch it on the big screen. Based on a tale written by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont, it featured the voices of several wonderful artists like Angela Lansbury and Jerry Orbach. It contained great music too. One of our favorite scenes was when Belle returned to the castle. As far as the film’s soundtrack, the kids seemed to enjoy the song “Be Our Guest.”

“Aladdin” (1992)

I’d also recommend watching director John Musker and Ron Clements’ film “Aladdin.” My children liked it as well. Their favorite character was the genie. They thought that he was funny. Robin Williams did the voice for the character, so it didn’t surprise me that the kids were amused by him. Other artists that participated in the film were Jonathan Freeman and Lea Salonga.

“The Lion King” (1994)

Although the previously mentioned films were popular with my brood, it was Director Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff’s film “The Lion King” that really made them happy. As a matter of fact, it won such praise from them that I actually purchased the DVD for our collection. They enjoyed the storyline, the animation and the soundtrack.

“Toy Story” (1995)

Another film that made a huge impression on my children was director John Lasseter’s “Toy Story.” As a result, I ended up buying the DVD as was well as a whole host of movie themed merchandise. One of my sons adored Buzz Lightyear and the other was a fan of Woody. Perhaps your children will fall in love with those characters as well.

“101 Dalmatians” (1996)

The last children’s film to make my list is director Stephen Herek’s “101 Dalmatians.” The kids liked it but I prefer the 1961 version because it is the one that I grew up with. Both films featured the same basic storyline. However, the 1961 version was animated. Therefore, you may want to show both versions to your children and see which version they like best.
