5 Family Friendly Movies About Leprechauns

Family Friendly Movies, Leprechauns

Has the impending St. Patrick’s Day holiday left you searching for films about leprechauns? If so, you should know that there are very few leprechaun films available that are worth their weight in Lucky Charms. And the ones that are tend to be perfect for family viewing. With that said, here’s a peek at five that you may want to consider watching:

“The Wearing of the Grin” (1951)

“The Wearing of the Grin” is actually an old cartoon that was released in the summer of 1951. Its storyline focuses on Porky Pig’s run in with a group of leprechauns. They force him to don a pair of magical shoes. Of course the magic associated with the shoes does not help Porky in the least. As a matter of fact, it causes him to dance right into danger. Don’t worry about poor Porky though. In the end, his encounter turns out to be just a bad dream. You can still catch the cartoon to this day on DVD. It’s on the “Looney Tunes Golden Collection: Volume 1.

“Darby O’Gill and the Little People” (1959)

Out of all the leprechaun movies on this list, my absolute favorite is “Darby O’Gill and the Little People.” In my experience, the storyline is heart-warming and suitable for most age groups. However, I should mention that the film does contain a few scenes that some young kids may find scary. At least they scared me when I was a little girl. Scenes to watch out for are the ones that involve the Death Coach. The flick was initially released in 1959 and was produced by Disney.

“The Luck of the Irish” (2001)

The Luck of the Irish” is another Disney film that your family may enjoy. It focuses on a teenager that is going through more hormonal changes than most guys his age. Why you may ask? Well, because he’s half leprechaun of course! If you ask me, only in the world of Disney is such madness possible. To top it all off, he also has to go searching for the family’s missing gold coin and battle a wicked leprechaun in the process. Overall, it’s a cute family film that the youngest members of your family will most likely find charming. As for the older kids, I am guessing that they’d probably rather take a pass. You can typically purchase a DVD version of the movie through assorted retailers or try and catch it on the Disney Channel.

“A Very Unlucky Leprechaun” (1998)

In my opinion, another cute film to consider introducing to you family is “A Very Unlucky Leprechaun.” It was released in 1998 and has a storyline that is quite different from the other films. In this flick, the action focuses on a family that is in danger of losing their home to the tax man. As a result, they seek the magically services of a leprechaun. What ensues afterward is both charming and funny. The film is available for purchase on DVD through select retailers. You can also rent it through assorted online movie services.

“The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns” (1999)

The last movie to make my list is Hallmark’s “The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns.” Personally, I love Hallmark movies and this one was no exception. It was released in 1999 and has all the qualities that you would expect from such a movie including a unique twist. It also features a great cast. Well-known stars that appear in the film include Randy Quaid and Whoopi Goldberg. Should you decide to check the film out for yourself, you’ll find it available for purchase through most major retailers.
