Don’t think that just because you’re new full-time job keeps you in your house most of the day that you have to suffer from cabin-fever. Many new moms fall into a quick depression because they lost touch with all the great fun hobbies that were outdoors. My wife used to figure skate and of course that is no longer a regular possibility since she’s taking care of our new daughter. It may be difficult to find new friends and hobbies when you spend so much time indoors with your little one but you’d be surprised just how much you can do at home with very few trips to the store.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to finding a new hobby, it just depends on your likes & dislikes and how creative you are. If you’re reading this, then it’s a good chance you have a computer. Just owning a computer opens a wealth of things you can do to keep your fun-level out of the red zone. Maintaining a healthy, happy attitude is key to avoiding depression and making it through each day with your little ones. Here are some ideas on fun ways to spend your day

Scrap booking: Binder, paper, photos, ribbon, odds and ends you’re on your way to starting yourself a hobby

Painting: What better way to express yourself than by painting surreal art, or better yet, portraits of your little one with the family pet

Candle making: A lot more creativity goes into candle making than one would expect. Choosing colors, forms, styles, scents. Candle making is a super easy, affordable and fun way to pass the time. You might even be able to make money by selling your candles

Mommy groups: Yahoo groups have hundreds of “mommy” groups around the US to bring new and old mothers together for group activities and group city walks for better health.

Audio books: These are a great way to keep your brain off the humdrum of the day as you go about your daily routine. No more putting your book down every time the little one fusses or to get some chores done.

Learn a musical instrument: It can be a terrific challenge to keep you busy, and the best part is when you learn to play well you can share your music with your family.

Crafts: A trip to your local craft store will unlock a hundred different hobbies you can take up by crafting. Crochet, quilting needlepoint, sculpting, jewelry, etc

Gardening: You can improve the curb appeal of your home, grow fresh vegetables or just plant yourself a nice little herb garden so you have fresh herbs for your meals.

Make Cards: If you have any scrap booking skill you can use many of the same techniques to create beautiful cards for all occasions for family. You might even be able to sell them. Let friends and family know you make them, and tell em they can call anytime to have you make a certain kind of card.

Photography: With a fairly inexpensive digital camera you can start taking photographs of anything you like. Turn em to black and white with pictures while you make trips to the park, downtown, nature, etc

Mystery Shopping: If you’re in a heavily populated area, you can join a mystery shopping program. This will allow you to shop at stores you normally visit, review the store, employees, and products and most companies reimburse some or all of the money you spend. Talk about fun shopping!

Web Design: Learning webdesign is extremely easy and will teach you how to open your own website you can use to sell craft items, post pictures, start a blog and more. If you got good enough you could even make money design basic web sites for other people and local businesses.

Furniture: You can find all kinds of old furniture like small tables and cabinets at garage sales that are made of real wood. Take em home, sand em down and paint or re-stain them, then sell them off or keep them.
