Humpback Whales, Save the Whales, Whales

According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare press release, Paul Won of Yarmouth Port, Ma., has won the IFAW Help Save the Humpback Whale Drawing Contest.

Paul Won, an 11 year-old from Massachusetts has won the national grand prize in the IFAW Help Save the Humpback Whale Drawing Contest that nearly 12,000 participants submitted entries in. Sponsored by IFWA and the Weekly Reader, students from grades fourth and fifth grade were asked to draw a humpback whale as well as write a short paragraph on why the humpback whales should be protected.

Paul Won’s statement that won them over was simple, yet straight to the point. Won’s winning sentence “The Earth is not only a home for humans. The whales should be saved for the balance of the world. When we lose the humpback whale, it is like losing nature’s beauty.” Coming from the mind of an 11 year-old, this is a very powerful statement that many need to take to heart.

The IFAW President, Fred O’Regan stated “Today’s children have a major stake in protecting whales, from the ongoing threat of commercial whaling by nations like Japan and Iceland to ocean pollution and global warming, whales face more threats today than at any other time in history. We must protect whales now to ensure they are here for future generations.”

Paul Won will collect his official award certificate tonite, August 8th, at the Melody Tent in Hyannis, Ma.. Along with the award ceremony, Paul and his family will go on the Hyannis Whale Watcher August 9th, in hopes that they see live humpback whales that Paul Won brought to life in his artwork and paragraph.
