Making gifts for new babies is one of the most rewarding things I have ever had the pleasure of doing. Hats are a great way to keep the babies heat from leaving their bodies, and keeps their temperature under control. You can make these as gifts for friends, family, co-workers or even for your own little ones. Don’t forget that there are always hospitals in need of volunteers to make baby hats, and if you want to contribute you should call your local hospital for details. All babies need something special for them, and those less fortunate need it too.
These also make great baby shower gifts, and Christmas presents for those that are expecting. I strongly suggest for newborns and their tender little heads that you only use baby yarn, that is specially soft for baby’s fragile skin. You can purchase baby yarn wherever yarns are sold in your area. Children over 3 months you can use a heavier yarn, but I would stay away from the burlap worsted weight acrylic yarn, like Red Heart until baby is at least 9 months old.

For the most part, here is the size chart for baby hats:
Preemie: E/F hook Depending on your preemie.
Newborn: F hook
3-6 Months: G/H hook – H would be a bit bigger.
6-9 Months: H/I hook – I would be bigger.
9-12 Months: I/J hook
This chart may not comply for all patterns, but for the most part it is the rule of thumb.
Baby Blue Hat
The yarn suggested is an okay yarn to use, half cotton half acrylic makes the stitches look beautiful, as well.
Ripple Hat
This hat is super warm, and can be modified by color to fit your needs. It also rolls up very well, in case it may be too big for baby’s little head.
Cloche Hat
This hat could be a great gift. To make it smaller, use a sport weight yarn and lower your hook size. Add crocheted leaves behind your flowers, or add buttons to the centers for even more fun.
Monkey Ear Flap Hat
This makes me so happy to look at. So very cute and adorable. Make pink for a girl, or add a bow in front of one of the ears. If you aren’t partial to ear flaps, just end before the ear flaps begin.
Pumpkin Beanie
I have made this pattern a dozen times. I sometimes make the orange part pastel colors, and instead of adding a coil of yarn I add leaves and make the hats look like flowers. This is very versatile. Quick and easy, and comes out great.
Standard Newborn Hat
This is the easiest of them all. This is traditionally what a newborn cap looks like, you can do it with or without the pom pom.
Puff Stitch Hat
So warm and cute to look at. Make them in coordinating colors, and stash them into a gift basket for a baby shower. I have made a few of these myself for my baby on the way. Great pattern.
The Rouge Cap
Such a darling cap that can be personalized with all sorts of embellishments. You could put a flower on the end, for a girl, or make it as is for a boy. Lower hook sizes for smaller heads, and raise for bigger ones.
Button Flower Beanie
Patterns like this make me happy. I love how crocheting has become such a modern thing these days. This hat is an old favorite, with a modern twist. How nice.

Standard cap for a newborn baby, I have also made a few of these for my own babies. Great cap for taking baby home in.
