10 Favorite Movie Quotes from Under the Tuscan Sun

Diane Lane, Tuscan, Under the Tuscan Sun

Although I have a lot of favorite movie quotes, the movie where I found the most was Under the Tuscan Sun starring Diane Lane. Here are the ones that hold a special meaning for me:

I worked while he pretended to be.” (Movie quote from Under the Tuscan Sun) This is a quote by Diane Lane in the movie in which she was referring to her character’s husband to whom she was newly divorced. Upset over the fact that he had cheated on her, but was asking for alimony due to the fact that she had supported him during the marriage, she made this statement to her lawyer. The funny thing about this statement it that both she and her husband were writers. She wrote book reviews and he was spending time at home working on a book.

I related to this statement, because as a writer myself, there are times where I feel like I am working, whereas there are times I feel like I am only pretending to work. Sadly, this often has to do with the financial outcome of whatever project I am working on…just as Lane eluded to in the movie.

“Terrible idea…don’t you just love those?” (Movie quote from Under the Tuscan Sun) This was a line in the movie by actress Lindsey Duncan, who played the captivating Katherine in the movie. The statement was made when she first meets Lane’s character, Frances, in Tuscany. Katherine asks Frances if she is going to buy a villa that she is looking at posted on the wall. Frances chuckles about what a terrible idea that would be given her circumstances. At this point, Katherine looks at her mischievously and says this wonderful line, as if daring Frances to go ahead and buy it.

I love this quote because so many wonderful things are spun from what we first thought was a terrible idea. It is all about risks and taking chances. I love this quote because I want to be more daring this way.

Never lose your childish enthusiasm and things will come your way.” (Movie quote from Under the Tuscan Sun) This is another quote by Lindsey Duncan in the movie. She is explaining to Frances about why she is so full of life and enthusiastic over every little detail of living.

I personally love this quote. I remember the times that I have lived with childish enthusiasm. It was usually when I let my guard down and didn’t care what anyone else thought. I remember feeling joy…pure joy. And nothing is more attractive than a joyful spirit., so surely people will be attracted to someone who lives this way.

“Live spherically…in many directions.” (Movie quote from Under the Tuscan Sun) This is yet another quote from Katherine, played by Lindsey Duncan, and she was speaking to Frances about the way to live your life.

I can relate to this as well. I have a difficult time living a balanced life. When one part of my life is lacking, it upsets the balance and I don’t feel good about myself.

“The most surprising thing about divorce is that it doesn’t actually kill you.” (Movie quote from Under the Tuscan Sun) Frances (Diane Lane) is speaking to the lawyer who helped her buy her villa. She is feeling anxious about her decision, and starts a bit of reminiscing about her divorce…obviously feeling a bit attracted to the lawyer.

This quote hits home with me because I always imagine divorce as being so devastating…almost feeling like death.

“You are my imagination come to life”. (Movie quote from Under the Tuscan Sun) This is another quote by Lindsey Duncan as she tells Frances what her mentor told her upon seeing her for the very first time, eating an ice cream as a young girl.

I like this quote because I think it would be wonderful if our imaginations could really come to life. It would show the world a lot about us that would be surprising.

“The procrastination is coming along fabulously. Soon it will breed abject self loathing, and then I’ll become a writing machine.” (Movie quote from Under the Tuscan Sun) This is a quote by Frances explaining to her friends how the book she is writing is coming along.

I can very much identify with this quote. As most writer’s I struggle with writer’s block from time to time. This quote describes exactly the way that I feel when I am in the midst of it.

“Regrets are a waste of time. They’re the past crippling the present.” (Movie quote from Under the Tuscan Sun) This statement was made by Lindsey Duncan as she tells Frances to stop feeling sorry for herself and move forward in her life.”

This quote really hit home with me for I have tendency to wish I had done things differently. Second guessing myself is something that really leads to nowhere.

I’m sick of being afraid all the time.” (Movie quote from Under the Tuscan Sun) This quote comes from Frances (Diane Lane) as she is wondering why she ever thought she could buy a villa in Tuscany and live in the big house all alone. In this quote she is referring to both her fear of moving on with her life as well as the fear of failure once she has taken those forward steps.

I can definitely relate to this. Sometimes I think fear rules my life. Fear of success and fear of failure are always there in the back of my mind, keeping me from moving forward.

“Even though I’m old, my heart still aches.” (Movie quote from Under the Tuscan Sun) This quote was made by the grandmother in the movie during a special dinner that Frances was invited to. The grandmother is crying all through dinner over an internet lover who found out her real age and then stopped emailing her. (This actress name was not found)

This quote really touched my heart. How easy it is to believe that those who are in their elderly years have already explored all of the deepest longings of the heart. I have always figured they have loved and lost enough in a lifetime to be too hard to be hurt again. It’s very nice to think that they are still open to those feelings of falling in love. I hope that when I am old, I will still have that vulnerability about myself.
