Yerba Mate and Weight Loss

Guarana, Yerba Mate

Yerba Mate can help you lose weight when it’s combined with other herbs for thermogenic effects and as long as you can tolerate caffeine.

If you are sensitive to caffeine or are addicted to caffeine, it is probably a wise idea to avoid Yerba Mate. Too much caffeine can prevent some people from losing weight.

I was drinking copious amounts of black tea when I decided to try Yerba Mate. I was used to caffeine in my system, but the Yerba Mate tea still made me feel dizzy and nauseous.

I decided to stop taking the Yerba Mate after feeling heart palpitations. A few months later I decided to get off of caffeine all together.

I prefer caffeine-free Raspberry Leaf tea for weight loss.

Some experts say it’s best to use Yerba Mate in moderation since there are some questions about the safety of drinking too much Yerba Mate.

Does Yerba Mate Work For Weight Loss?

According to one study, mixing Yerba Mate with Guarana (a shrub native to Venezuela that contains caffeine) and Damiana (a native plant in Mexico used as an aphrodisiac) resulted in significant weight loss.

Other weight loss formulas using Yerba Mate include combining it with Green tea extract, which also contains caffeine.

Reports of Yerba Mate’s health benefits are mixed. Some experts say it can neutralize free radicals that cause cancer.

On the other hand, Yerba Mate has also been linked to an increased risk of some cancers when consumed regularly.

Yerba Mate side effects include anxiety, headaches, nausea and insomnia.

Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is made from the leaves of an evergreen tree that grows in the wild rainforests of South America. A member of the Holly family, Yerba Mate leaves are used as a popular South American tea.

You can also buy Yerba Mate as a supplement in pill form or in various energy drinks.

While Yerba Mate can raise your metabolic rate like any stimulant and reduce your appetite, it’s not a good choice for people with thyroid problems.

If you have exhausted your thyroid by consuming too much caffeine — as I have done in the past — your metabolism will slow down.

While it may not happen overnight, you could actually gain weight by drinking Yerba Mate or other forms of caffeine.

On the other hand, some people benefit from the boost that caffeine provides. Unlike some caffeine sources, Yerba Mate contains nutrients such as Chromium, Potassium, Magnesium, Iron, Zinc, Riboflavin, Niacin.

Yerba Mate tea is, of course, calorie free.

When making Yerba Mate tea, use hot water instead of boiling water. Boiling water may destroy antioxidants.

Whether you should use Yerba Mate for weight loss depends on your particular situation. Have your thyroid checked before consuming Yerba Mate or other forms of caffeine. Pay careful attention to how you feel when you drink Yerba Mate tea or drinks. If you feel your heart racing, dizziness or headaches, stop taking it.
