Ways to Make Reading Fun for Kids

Reading usually isn’t at the top of the list of things kids enjoy doing. But that doesn’t have to be the case. Reading can be fun. If you’re wondering how, continue on to find out ways to make reading fun for kids.

Start Out Simple

If your child is just learning how to read, remember the whole process can be overwhelming. Start out simple by helping them identify and sound out the letters of the alphabet.

Use flash cards to help kids enjoy the process of learning to read. Don’t overwhelm them with too many books with too many words.

When you do decide to use books, choose ones with short and simple sentences and lots of pictures.

Use what your kids are interested in

Even adults have a hard time reading something they don’t find interesting. Kid’s usually have shorter attention spans and lose interest quickly. Don’t try to get them to read books that aren’t interesting. Granted they’ll have to read many things they don’t find interesting as they grow, go through school, and continue to learn, but the best way to get kids interested in reading and make reading fun for them is to provide them with books they’ll find interesting.

If your child likes horses, get them books about horses, if they like super heroes get them books about super heroes. If they enjoy what they’re reading it will make reading fun for kids.

Act out the stories

Kids love to be involved in what they’re doing. They like to be active and having fun. Simply reading the words in a book can be boring to them. Why not act out the scenes that unfold as you read the book. This will work especially well with small children.

Although it can also be a great way to make reading fun for older kids. If there is more than one character in the book, let the kids each be a different character and read their character’s lines from the book. If you want to get involved, you can be the narrator. Turn books into a seek and find word game

Kids love seek and find games so why not try turning reading time into a seek and find game. Before you begin reading a book, whether you will be reading it with your kids or they will be reading it alone, choose key words from the book that you want the kids to find and either have them write down the words when they find them, or say the word out loud if you are reading the book with them.

This turns reading into an interactive game that they will love. They’ll not only have fun, but it will also help them to stay focused and pay attention as they read.
