If you have been anywhere in the vicinity of Tennessee, you have probably seen the red and black bird houses that say “See Rock City” in big white letters. I had one hanging in my yard a few years ago. I left it there for the new owners because I am close enough to Rock City and Lookout Mountain that I can go again and buy another one.
Where is Rock City?
Rock City is located on Lookout Mountain, just 6 miles from downtown Chattanooga. Lookout Mountain actually sits in Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia and is part of the Cumberland Plateau.
What is Rock City?
It is a maze of rock formations, The Enchanted Trail, that guests climb from the entrance to the top of the mountain. There is an area that you need to take a deep breath to squeeze through the rocks. That section is known as ‘Fat Man’s Squeeze’. There are tunnels called ‘Fairyland Caverns’ that are full of little gnomes that have been there since before I was a kid. There are well over 400 native plants for your enjoyment.
What is at the top of the mountain?
The trek up Lookout Mountain is well worth the effort. Once at the top, you will witness a vista that goes as far as the eye can see. Within that view you will see 7 states: Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama. However, not everyone believes that it is possible to see 7 states. On a clear day you can see 100 miles to Knoxville, Tennessee.
Who visits Rock City and Lookout Mountain?
Many people from all over the United States visit Chattanooga, TN and wind up on Lookout Mountain. A good portion of those visitors buy one of the famous bird houses at the gift shop.
Is Rock City and Lookout Mountain Pet Friendly?
Yes, dogs are welcome to the attraction. Of course they must be kept on a leash at all times. Remember that is hot and humid in the summer and not all dogs can make that long hike upward.
Is there a gift shop or restaurant?
Yes to both. As you exit the attraction you are led directly through their gift shop. Once you leave the gift shop there is a restaurant on the premises. There is a picnic area near the parking lot, so feel free to take your cooler and have a picnic.
How much does it cost to visit Rock City?
The cost is $17.95 for adults, $9.95 for kids from 3 to 12 years old. You can buy your tickets on-line or at the gate. Join their email list and you will receive promotional information and discounts.

Once you get to Chattanooga you will not be able to miss the directional signs to Lookout Mountain and Rock City.
My personal memories of Rock City
When I was a child my parents took me to Rock City and I have the old fashioned home movies to prove it. Several years ago my husband and I were on vacation in North Carolina. Since it was only a 1 ½ hour drive to Chattanooga, I talked him into going to Rock City. I had already checked with Rock City and knew it was pet friendly. Off we went and Abby the lab made it successfully to the top, pulling my husband most of the way! Once at the top of Lookout Mountain the beautiful view made the walk worthwhile.
