What a hassle! Take the bed skirt off, wash it, put it back on. But it looks so beautiful – and hides underneath the bed – who doesn’t have one nowadays? If you found out how much better life would be with a Velcro bed skirt, though, you would never go back to the original type. No one wants to move the mattress to change the skirt and you’ll never have to again. Plus, it’s a lot of work to make a new bed skirt but, with Velcro, it’s as easy as cutting a piece of cloth.

A Velcro bed skirt is beneficial in more than one way. If you’re wanting to make your own, it’s very easy, because you won’t need the fabric piece, which goes between the box spring and mattress. And, rather than strip the bed, and move the mattress, you can simply stick the bed skirt to the box spring.

Peel-n-stick Velcro is such a wonderful thing. Measure along one of the long sides of the bed, from the top corner, to the bottom corner, and cut two strips to be that length. Measure across the bottom of the mattress and cut one piece to be that size. Peel the backing off of each Velcro strip and stick it to the mattress. Position the pieces so that they’re as close to the welt as possible.

Cut a very long piece of cloth; it will likely be necessary to sew pieces together to end up with a piece that’s long enough. Measure from one top corner of the bed, down the side, across the bottom, and back up to the opposite top corner. The cloth you cut will need to be that long if you want a straight bed skirt. For a ruffled one, make that measurement nearly twice as long.

To sew the straight bed skirt, simply stitch the Velcro along the top edge (or peel and stick), and hem the bottom edge (optional). To make the ruffled version, hem the whole thing, and then sew the Velcro on. As you do, make small pleats along the top edge, sewing over each pleat with the Velcro. If you’re just using the peel-n-stick method, create each pleat, and stick the Velcro to it.

To put the bed skirt on, stick the bed skirt Velcro to the box spring Velcro. That’s it. To remove the skirt, just yank it off, lifting slightly on the edge of the bed. To replace the skirt without moving the mattress, just slide the edges of the skirt between the edges of the box spring and mattress. It’s a little sad to see that old bed skirt in the trash, right?
