Transforming Regular Terra-Cotta Pots into Decorative Flower Pots

Flower Pots, Terra Cotta Pots, Terracotta

Decorative terra-cotta flower pots add charm to the home and garden. With a few simple instructions you can decorate flower pots for yourself and maybe a few of your friends.

Decoupaged Rose Flower Pot:

Materials:

Terracotta pot
Acrylic paint – desired color
Clear acrylic spray sealer
Roses – cut and trimmed from flower catalogs, magazines or wrapping paper
Foam brush
White Glue

Wipe off any residue on terracotta pot with a damp cloth.

Take desired color of paint and with foam brush, paint the outside of the flower pot and 2 inches on the inside rim.

In a well-ventilated area, spray a coat of the acrylic sealant on the inside and out of the pot. Let dry.

With white glue and foam brush, apply glue to an area where you would like a rose to go. Next put on the rose and cover it with another coating of the glue, to flatten and get any air bubbles out. Repeat this step until the roses are around the pot as desired. Let dry.

To finish spray another coat of the sealant over the inside and out again.

Faux Stone Flower Pot

Material:

Terra-cotta pot
White acrylic paint
4 different stone colors of acrylic paint
Clear acrylic spray sealer
Compressed craft sponge
Foam brush
Wax paper
Marking pen
Scissors

Take the compressed sponge and drawn on 4 stone shapes (sort of like an out of shape jelly bean) about ¾ – 1 ½ inches depending on the size of your pot and cut each one out. Run sponges under water and gently squeeze out, and set aside to dry.

Wipe off any residue on terracotta pot with a damp cloth.

Take the white paint and with the foam brush, paint the outside of the flower pot and 2 inches on the inside rim.

In a well-ventilated area, spray a coat of the acrylic sealant on the inside and out of the pot. Let dry.

Take a glass or Styrofoam plate and squeeze a bit of each color paint on to the plate. There should be a sponge for each color. Dab a sponge into the paint, and lightly dab off a bit on a piece of wax paper. Press sponges onto the flower pot to make a faux stone, turning shapes in different directions, to fit near other stones. Do this step until the flower pot is covered with stone and let dry.

To finish the faux stone flower pot, spray another coat of the sealant on the inside and out.

With these basic steps of decorating terracotta flower pots, you can make any kind you like. Follow the steps above on painting and sealing the terracotta pots. You can stencil on a design, use a rubber stamp or write on names of herbs or flowers on the pots.
You can sponge on shapes, polka dots or a faux mosaic. You can even put on actual mosaic using some grout and seal well.
