Top Five Dream LARP Locations for LARPers

Paranormal Experiences

LARPers (live action role players) excel at the art of bringing a story to life by acting out characters’ actions. In America, fantasy LARP is one of the more popular LARP genres, but there has been growing interest in other types of LARPs as well-such as zombie LARPs, war games and vampire LARPs.

Recently, Amber of Mortalis Games wrote that she was inspired by a dilapidated landscape she read about in the United States. For LARPers, inspiration to create can certainly come from a variety of landscapes.

These dream LARP destinations could function as a setting for multiple LARP genres. Some LARP groups such as Seventh Kingdom IGE of New Jersey, US are noted to focus on one genre, though occasionally perform in another. This particular group primarily organizes a monthly fantasy game, but has performed in the horror and mystery genre for other events.

Dunluce Castle, Antrim Coast, Northern Ireland, UK

What is it? Part of this castle has fallen into the sea. Presently, it stands with no roof and serves as a tourist destination. Dunluce was built over an old fort and comes to historical mention in the late sixteenth century. Today, tourists can take guided or unguided tours of the castle.

LARP function: Dunluce Castle could serve in many LARP genres. This outdoor location would work for any sort of ruined castle or temple in a fantasy game, a shelter or hiding place in a World War II-era game or a dwelling place for vampires. Battle gamers might also enjoy the open-air feeling and tactical intrigue of this location.

Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

What is it? The Eastern State Penitentiary is a former prison and rehabilitation center located in Philadelphia. Hundreds of people have reported paranormal experiences here. ESP includes a courtyard, Al Capone’s furnished cell, halls upon halls of abandoned cells and an eerie art installation. Presently, the Eastern State Penitentiary serves as a tourist destination for those interested in history and the paranormal.

LARP function: This would be a prime location for a paranormal LARP. Since its exterior looks like a castle, it would be incredible useful to a fantasy LARP. Post-apocalyptic games would definitely find an advantage in the crumbling state of the penitentiary.

Palace of Versailles, Paris, France

What is it? This location is ornate and grandiose. Its elaborate gardens, ornamented sculptures and Parisian setting is inspired by its historical importance to courtiers and royalty.

LARP function: This palace would be ideal for LARPs involving social combat. Historical, fantasy, or vampire LARPs would find a great deal of use for this palace.

Tower of London, London, UK

What is it? A large amount of the property surrounding the Tower of London still remains in its original (or reconstructed as original) form. Additionally, the guards still wear historical clothing, and visitors will encounter some beefeaters here-as well as some jewels. The tower itself still contains wall-carvings from prisoners over the centuries-prayers and pleas and messages of remembrance. The Tower of London is most remembered with a connection to the Tudor dynasty.

LARP function: This is an incredibly versatile destination due to its indoor and outdoor appearance. Most LARPers could find an engaging use for this environment.

Mall of America, Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA

What is it? The Mall of America is the largest (floor area) mall space in the United States. Seen as the epitome of consumerism, the mall serves as a transportation hub and includes an aquarium.

LARP function: Most modern LARPs would make great use of this space. The expansive location would be particularly appealing for zombie LARPs looking to emulate a George A. Romero zombie universe.

The supposition that large, functioning spaces could be permitted to use for LARP is unfortunately fantasy within itself. The collateral damage potential is great, especially in a location like the Mall of America. However, it’s fun to dream. What’s your dream space for LARPing?
