Bras are perhaps one of the most important things that a woman wears every day (unless she’s flat chested; then it probably doesn’t affect her too much). When girls get old enough to finally start wearing them, it truly is a right of passage, and their male counterparts definitely take note. Bras have fascinated young males for decades, and this fascination often goes on through adulthood, at which time they are usually more interested in finding ways to get them off. They’ve been burned, padded, destrapped, and decorated over the years, and they’ve also gotten quite a bit of attention from filmmakers. Love them or hate them, this is a list of some of the greatest film moments of these notorious breast holders:
Psycho (1960)
There may not seem to be anything all that special about the scenes in this film where Janet Leigh appeared in her conical bra now, but at the time they were incredibly controversial. Showing a woman in her bra in a mainstream film was pretty much unheard of at the time, and the scenes where Janet Leigh’s character Marion has just concluded an afternoon sex session and is in her bra getting dressed and later when the film portrays an act of voyeurism when Norman Bates spies on her undressing through a peephole were way too raunchy for many filmgoers. Although tame by today’s standards, the scenes did open the doors for more sexual scenes in cinema, helping make it what it is today.
The 10th Victim (1965)
The bra in this film is notable because it doesn’t only provide lift and definition, it has another very important function: it kills people. This film stars famous Bond girl Ursula Andress as a femme fatale killer who performs a striptease at a club. Her bra is definitely overloaded, because she’s packing two double-barreled guns that she fires off during the show in an effort to get to her 10th victim to win a human hunting game. This novel brassiere was also the inspiration for the fembots in the ‘Austin Powers-International Man of Mystery’ comedy, and I’m sure a lot of women would like to own one when it comes to oversexed, overzealous males.
Barbarella (1968)
In this futuristic erotic thriller, Jane Fonda and her costars wear a variety of bizarre costumes as her character Barbarella explores space in the sexiest way possible. One of the most notable costumes of the many that Fonda wears throughout the film is a space suit that has a see-through, plastic bra built in that is incredibly sexy, but has to win the award for the most uncomfortable bra ever made.
Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* But Were Afraid to Ask (1972)
The bra scene in this movie is definitely one of the most bizarre you will ever see (and this film is pretty bizarre itself). Woody Allen is obviously very interested in the female form, but he takes it to extremes here with a gigantic killer breast released by a mad scientist that is final stopped by, what else? A gigantic bra.
Weird Science (1985)
It’s not supermodel Kelly LeBrock that stars in the memorable bra scene in this film; it’s the two dorky teens that create her character using a computer program. The two geeks wear bras on top of their heads ceremoniously as they sort through pictures of supermodels to feed to the computer, which will then produce their perfect woman. This film is definitely an 80’s classic, and one of those films that geeks just pray could become a reality.
The Slums of Beverly Hills (1998)
This film does a great job in portraying some women’s dismay at the choices of undergarments available to them. Natasha Lyonne’s character is a teen girl extremely blessed with very ample breasts in this film, but she’s not particularly happy with them because of the very industrial, very unsexy bra they require her to wear. She has to go bra shopping with her father, and her breasts get her a lot of unwanted attention. Eventually her big breasts and the horrible bra she has to wear because of them bring her to consult a plastic surgeon about getting a breast reduction, but in the end, she decides they aren’t so bad after all and decides to stick with them (Thank goodness! Breast reductions are one of mankind’s worst inventions.)
While bras aren’t as popular in films as what is underneath them, they can still make for some pretty funny and attention-grabbing film moments. Sadly, as nudity in films becomes more and more popular, filmmakers don’t get as creative with bras as they used to. But if you are a fan of the undergarment, they do have great starring roles in the films on this list.
