Are you looking for a place to take the kids in Atlanta, Georgia this winter? If so, I’d like to make a few suggestions. In my experience, there are several places located within the city that are ideal for cold weather fun. Here’s a quick look at some of the best ones:
Centennial Olympic Park
For starters, why not embrace the cold weather and don a pair of ice skates? After all, the Centennial Olympic Park does get outfitted with a seasonal ice skating rink and holiday lights each year. Frankly, I find the park’s holiday lights display positively charming. I should also mention that each 90 minute ice skating session is apt to cost a family of four $40. The rink’s hours of operation vary.
The Children’s Museum of Atlanta
During the winter months, The Children’s Museum of Atlanta is another great place to take the kids. Parents of active toddlers will undoubtedly appreciate the museum’s Crawl Space area. It features opportunities for the kids to burn off some pent up energy in a soft play environment. In my opinion, the Let Your Creativity Flow exhibit is ideal for preschoolers. Elementary school age kids, on the other hand, may appreciate the Tools for Solutions exhibit. The museum opens daily and admission fees start at $13 per person. Families looking to save a few bucks should also make it a point to stop by the Centennial Olympic Park’s ice skating rink before visiting the museum. Sometimes there are museum discount coupons on offer there that are likely to save families $2 or more in admission fees.
I have found that the Georgia Aquarium is a superb winter destination as well. Personally, I’d recommend that families plan on spending at least four hours there. That way, they will be able to enjoy many of the aquarium’s exhibits. In addition, families with small children should plan on bringing their own portable strollers. Otherwise, they are apt to be disappointed. Activities of note include the Dolphin Tales show, the 4D Theater and the Behind the Scenes Tours. The museum opens year round and admission fees vary. One way that families can save time is to buy their admission tickets online.
LEGOLAND Discovery Center
The LEGOLAND Discovery Center is a fun place to visit in the winter too. I’d suggest that families plan on spending at least three hours at the center. I would also recommend that families take the factory tour, visit the 4D cinema and take a ride on Merlin’s Apprentice. Admission fees start at $19 per adult and $15 per child. However, families can typically save a bit of money by purchasing their tickets online. The center tends to open daily with varying hours of operation.
Center for Puppetry Arts
Last but not least, I’d recommend that families consider visiting the Center for Puppetry Arts as well. It features a cool museum, puppet making workshops and opportunities to watch family friendly puppet shows. Personally, I am a fan of the Puppets: The Power of Wonder exhibit. If you ask me, the exhibit’s Trashcan Phoenix and Praying Mantis are really something to see. Admission costs start at $17 per person.
