Golden Retrievers, Guard Dogs, Labrador Retrievers, Large Dog Breeds, Rottweilers

Contrary to popular opinion, a large pet in the house is not always accompanied by a huge mess and more hassle for its owner. Rather, having a big dog around may turn out to be very rewarding for a family of any size. There are several large dog breeds that make wonderful companions and pets but the following list has narrowed the choice down to the top 5 breeds of large dogs.

1. Labrador Retriever – This is the most popular dog breed in the U.S. and has been for many years because of their stable temperament and ease of training. Labrador Retrievers (or “Labs”) are known to be friendly with people and other dogs as well. These dogs are quite active and possess a lot of energy. This means that they will be most happy in a family that tends to have an active lifestyle, though they will be happy regardless of the fact. Labs desire physical contact with people and they will follow their owners around just about everywhere, so people who love affectionate dogs will enjoy the presence of Labradors.

2. German Shepherd Dog – Known as the world’s leading police and military dog, the German Shepherd Dog is also one of the more popular family dogs in the U.S. These dogs are loyal to their owners and families and they are fearless, protective and strong making them one of the best guard dogs. German Shepherds do not make friends indiscriminately and must be approached by strangers appropriately. They are fond of children whom they have built relationships with. These fun-loving dogs are very active and require daily exercise and physical activity.

3. Golden Retriever Similar to the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retrievers are friendly, eager-to-please dogs who love to be with their owners, other people and even other dogs. The only major difference is in regards to their appearance in that Golden Retrievers are characterized by their long gold-colored coat and they are a beauty to behold. They are active, fun-loving dogs who will need their daily exercise. They are also highly intelligent and are used as guide, assistance and rescue dogs.

4. Boxer – Boxers are known for their strength and agility which allow them to be effective guardians and protectors of one’s home. They are also known to be very affectionate with humans, especially with children. Boxers desire human contact so much that they will constantly whimper and whine for love and attention from their owners and try to cuddle with family members. Boxers are constantly active and will want to play fetch or tug and pull for a good portion of the day. Boxers thrive in families that love physical activity both indoors and outdoors.

5. Rottweiler – These powerful dogs are commonly used as guard dogs or police dogs because of their intelligence, awareness, strength and endurance among other desirable traits. Rottweilers are also known for being loyal, self-confident and courageous which are qualities that any family would want in their dog. Not only do they make great companions due to the love they possess for their owners, but they are also territorial and protective of the home and family. This means that they are not initially fond of strangers and therefore proper introductions are a must when acquainting your Rottweiler with a visitor. Rottweilers are easily trained which is a definite plus.
