Top 3 Weekend Getaways in Michigan

Mackinac, Mackinaw City

Michigan is a beautiful state with a lot to offer. Whether you’re looking for a romantic escape, outdoor recreation, nightlife, or something else in your weekend getaway, consider spending time in one of Michigan’s top three places to get away from it all.

Mackinac Island

For a romantic weekend getaway in Michigan, Mackinac Island, with its Victorian charm, is the place to be. Located in Lake Huron, the island is less than four square miles, most of which is part of the Mackinac Island State Park.

First, you’ll need to book your accommodations. There are many options, but if you want the most convenient location, look for something near the water and the downtown area. The Main Street Inn & Suites is a great choice with a wide range of prices. A Deluxe Standard Interior Room starts at $80 a night, but for something more special, take a look at the One Bedroom Suite with Jacuzzi; it will set you back anywhere from $190 to $315 a night.

Since your getaway destination is an island, you won’t be able to drive straight to your accommodations. In fact, you’ll arrive by ferry; motor vehicles aren’t allowed on the island. Ferries depart from Mackinaw City (lower Michigan) and St. Ignace (U.P.) and cross the Straits of Mackinac to the island. No matter which shuttle you choose, it will cost about $24 for each adult round-trip ticket, including parking on the mainland; if you buy the tickets online, you’ll save a few dollars. Check the schedules for the departure times, and don’t forget that ferry access to the island is seasonal. When you reach the island, porters will be on hand to help you with your luggage. You can walk to your room or take a local taxi (horse and carriage).

At mealtime, you’ll have plenty of terrific options. The Yankee Rebel Tavern, located downtown at 1493 Astor Street, is a good choice; you should go there at least once during your stay. Whatever you do, save room for some fudge. Fudge shops are plentiful on the island, and you can’t go wrong–especially if you take advantage of the free samples to help you choose.

For a truly romantic evening, hire a horse-drawn carriage to take you around the island. If you’re feeling adventurous or if you’d like a little more privacy, rent one where you can do the driving. Your horse will be familiar with the island, even if you’re not!

Manistee

If you’re looking for a getaway with lots of possibilities, head to Manistee; this Victorian seaside town has it all. Stay at the Inn at Manistee National Golf & Resort, at 4797 U.S. 31 South. Located between two golf courses and next to Manistee National Forest, this resort offers 42 recently renovated rooms, including 12 suites. Amenities include a pool, a putting green, a sports lounge, and a restaurant. It’s open all year, and the rates are quite reasonable, ranging from $60 to $130 a night depending on the room and the season.

There’s plenty to do at the resort, but wine lovers should also check out Douglas Valley Organic Vineyards. You can sample their wines and even buy some seasonal produce to take home with you. If you’re in the mood for some games of chance, head to the Little River Casino Resort. Don’t forget to make time for shopping, sightseeing, and a trip to the beach.

When it’s time to eat, make sure you have at least one meal at the House of Flavors, located at 284 River Street. This local favorite serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, specializing in roast turkey dishes and ice cream. Another local favorite is the Bungalow Inn at 1100 28th Street, where you can watch the game or indulge in the Saturday prime rib special.

Detroit

If you live for nightlife, enjoy the Las Vegas experience in Detroit with a weekend at the MGM Grand Detroit, located at 1777 Third Street. Although this is a casino, there is much more to do than play the slots. The MGM Grand Detroit boasts five bars and lounges, including the V Nightclub, one of the top 100 nightclubs in the nation. Your accommodations will cost from $250 up per night, depending on the season and the type of room. The hotel rooms are all non-smoking, but smoking is allowed in the casino. Indulge in a couples massage or any of the other luxuries offered at the spa. When it’s time to eat, you’ll have your pick of casual fare or fine dining at one of the facility’s restaurants. At the end of the day, return to your well-appointed room to wind down before starting again in the morning.

If you can tear yourself away from the hotel, check out some of Detroit’s other attractions. The Motown Historical Museum, the Detroit Opera House, and Greektown are just a few of the many options.

These are just three of the terrific possibilities for a weekend getaway in Michigan. With so many wonderful things to see and do, you’ll want to go back again and again to take advantage of all that Michigan has to offer.
