The following are 11 (I couldn’t narrow it down to 10) of my favorite movie quotes. I chose them based on a moral message or lesson behind each. They are listed in no particular order. Enjoy them and my interpretations.
Dark Planet:
“The side of angels is seldom times self-evident.”
I take this to mean that whatever side you are on is the side you will view as being good, correct – the angelic side. Take a war, such as the Iraq war. The U.S. troops are fighting for us and so we all perceive them to be the good guys. al-Qaida is fighting for their people so they believe they are good. It’s a matter of perspective. I don’t condone terrorism but to the “bad” Iraqis, we are terrorists to them. It’s only logical. Our troops are heroic but what of the U.S. politicians that control where are troops fight and have an agenda? Who are the angels? Who are the devils?
K-PAX, Ernie:
“Dying’s something you have no control over. Why waste your life being afraid of it?”
This one’s simple. Simply don’t fear death.
Rocky Horror Picture Show, Dr. Frank N. Furter:
“Don’t dream it. Be it.”
Rocky Horror Picture Show is mostly entertaining and humorous but this quote has meaning. That is that we shouldn’t only have dreams, we should try to live those dreams and make them reality or what’s the point?
Addams Family Values, Wednesday:
“This is my costume. I’m a homicidal maniac; they look just like everyone else.”
This is so true. Addams Family is a morbid comedy but this quote stands up in reality. Killers are all around us but we don’t recognize them. Many serial killers, like Gacy and Bundy, lived as upstanding citizens yet were heinous killers. Look around you and ask yourself how well you know your co-worker, friend, or family member?
Alone in the Dark:
“Just because you can’t see something doesn’t mean it can’t kill you.”
This is a horror movie but this quote can mean many things. I focus it toward criminals, killers, and hate groups. Most of you despise what the KKK stands for and wish they’d go away and take their propaganda objects with them. But think on this. If hate groups go into hiding, like they used to decades ago, they can still hurt and kill people and you wouldn’t see them until it’s too late. Isn’t it better to know and see the enemy in front of you, so you can more effectively combat against them? To curse a disease, don’t you have to see and know what you’re up against or do you flail all about against hidden disease?
Dead Poet’s Society, Mr. Keating:
“No matter what anybody tells you – Words and ideas can change the world.”
Dead Poet’s Society is one of my favorite movies, filled with tons of great quotes.
This quote is so true. Words can and do change the world. If you think about it, words even cause wars. Disagreements occur, people argue, countries pass declarations of war, and killing begins. Peace and understanding can also come from words. And one day, after evil aliens intercept our radio signals and data we sent out via space probes, our words will cause the aliens to attack and forever change our world. Either that or I’ve read too much science fiction.
Carnival of Souls (1998):
“Sometimes you have to face your demons in order to see the angels.”
An awful low-budget horror remake of the original..
This quote is special to me. It tells me that in order to see the good, first we must see the bad. The comparison of the two will allow us to see the good more powerfully than if we only ever see the good. Good and bad coexist in the word and within us. No true understanding of good can occur without a struggle, lest it be a one-sided view of a multifaceted world.
Man on the Moon:
Meditation coordinator: “It seems you just don’t respect anything.”
Andy: “Of course I do, I just think of the world as an illusion and we shouldn’t take ourselves so seriously.”
Man on the Moon is about the life of Andy Kaufman, one of the most misunderstood comedians to ever live. I agree with the quote by Andy that everyone takes everything too serious. I’m like Andy in the sense that I’m sarcastic and too jokey at times. Many people have said I’m not serious enough. Conversely, many other people tell me I’m too dark and serious. What the heck am I supposed to be? I’m a complex person like Andy. The world dislikes personalities that don’t adhere to one specific color in a multi-colored spectrum or to a norm.
Lord of the Rings, Gandolf:
“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”
This is an obvious lesson.
Dead Poet’s Society, Mr. Keating:
“We all have a great need for acceptance. But you must trust that your beliefs are unique, your own, even though others may think them odd or unpopular, even though the herd may go “That’s bad.”
This simply means that we should say what we want without fear of repercussions from having eccentric ideas. If everyone feared it, we’d still think the world is flat. Of course, it hurt a lot more centuries ago with people being imprisoned or executed for their ideas. If you think society is worse today imagine if you were burned at the stake by the Puritans in Salem centuries ago.
Donnie Darko, Ed:
“What ever happens to you, whatever sh*t you come up against, you just say and do whatever’s in your heart. Be honest; tell the truth, even if they do look at you funny. They will. They’ll call you fool. Tell you you’re wrong. But there’s something you got to understand son. And that’s almost all of those people are full of sh*t. They’re all part of this great big conspiracy: bullsh*t. And they’re afraid of people like you…because those bullsh*tters know that you’re smarter than all of them. You know what you say to people like that? F*ck you.”
This is my life motto. It’s like it was written specifically for me. I’m honest and say what I think. Many people try to bash me and call me names but I’ll never quit saying what I think to everyone. If you don’t like it, read the two final words of the quote.
