Wood Turning, Woodworking Projects, Woodworking Tools

There are some tools you can not go without when you are working on wood projects. These are the top 10 of the must haves when it comes to any wood project, big or small, that you plan to complete.

Chisel set:

You will need these more often then you realize. Removing pieces from small areas, smoothing edges, creating the exact corner or shape that you want. A chisel set is a must have tool for all woodworking projects.

Lathe:

Having a Lathe on hand will make wood turning go so much faster and smoother. Create legs and arms to furniture, decorative pieces and much more. A wood Lathe is handy to have when making furniture and can even be used for smaller projects, such as pens, toys, bowls and even plates.

Table Saw:

Unless you want to pay much higher prices for the wood you buy, then you will want to have a table saw. You will need it to cut down large planks and sheets of wood. Having the lumber yard do it ups your cost and you are able to control how and when you cut your wood. Table saws are needed for other projects as well and as a place for measuring and laying your pieces out too.

Band Saw:

Want to create just the right angle and not have to do it by hand? Then a band saw will be needed. Band saws are great for making unique shapes and designs in wood, as well as having one available so that you are not trying to clamp a piece of wood to something to cut it with a hand saw.

Drill Press:

Being able to quickly and efficiently drill through wood is as important as cutting the wood. You’ll need a drill press for making precision holes or to create a place to start when needing to carve from the inside out.

Jointer:

Jointers are used for precision cuts and there are dual blades in them. They are also for create unique edges on wood that you may use for tables, chairs or shelves as well. Jointers have multiple purposes and are needed many times to get an exact measurement, that a table saw can’t handle.

Planer:

Do you have a piece of wood you want to use, but it has become warped or has rough edges? A planer is exactly what you need to create planks of wood for any project. You can shave off and turn a twisted and warped piece of wood into a workable and designer piece in no time flat.

Drum Sander:

Unless you want to sand every piece of wood and project by hand for hours on end, you will need a drum sander to get things done in a timely manner. Drum sanders will smooth and finish the wood for you with very little effort or time needed.

Tenoning Jig:

A tenoning jig is used for additional precision cuts, as well as clamping wood to move through a table saw or jointer. You are able to set it to make the same cuts over and over again, with each being exact and perfect as the one before.

Dust Collector:

If you don’t already have a dust collector, get one. The amount of saw dust that is created when working on wood projects is more than you will ever expect. It takes hours to fully clean up and does get everywhere. Not to mention that you do not want to be breathing all the dust and debris that the wood tools are creating. Dust collectors are easy to use and make clean up so much faster. They are quiet and you will want to run out and get one the first time you do a wood project and see that now you have 2 hours of clean up to complete as well.
