Top 10 Love Songs of the ’90s by Women

Best Love Songs

Women really seemed to find their voices in the ’90s. Female artists of the ’90s were strong women who weren’t afraid to speak their minds or wear their hearts on their sleeves. This is a list of some of the best love songs by women of the decade, and although some of them might seem a bit and cheesy and overplayed now, they were the soundtracks to the love lives of many women at the time:

Nothing Compares 2 U’ by Sinead O’Connor – Sinead O’Connor sadly went on to become an ostracized figure because of her outrageous actions and beliefs. But before everyone hated her, they loved her sweet mystical-sounding love song and angelic voice.

I Love You Always Forever’ by Donna Lewis – This sugary sweet pop song was as upbeat and catchy as they come, and every girl wanted a gorgeous guy with blue eyes to dedicate it to.

‘Head Over Feet’ by Alanis Morissette – It was hard to imagine angry Alanis ever singing anything sweet after ‘You Oughta Know’, but she really pulled it off with this addicting love song.

‘You Were Meant For Me’ by Jewel – This song is for all the girls who’ve had their hearts broken by the man they thought they were meant to be with. In it Jewel describes how difficult her everyday actions become after losing the one she loves, and everyone who’d been there before fell in love with this song.

‘Fantasy’ by Mariah Carey – Mariah Carey ruled the airwaves in the 90’s with multiple sickly sweet love songs, but this is one of her better ones. It’s got a great, unforgettable beat and really showcases Mariah’s vocal range, something most female vocalists can only fantasize about having.

‘My Heart Will Go On’ by Celine Dion – What do you get when a blockbuster artist sings a song for a blockbuster film? An unstoppable hit that became the ultimate love song for all girls obsessed with Leonardo DiCaprico and ‘Titanic’. It was definitely overplayed, but only because girls just couldn’t get enough of daydreaming about being in Kate Winslet’s place.

‘Don’t Speak’ by No Doubt – Gwen Stefani’s breakup with bandmate Tony Kanal was the inspiration for this angst-filled hit. It had to be awkward for the two playing this broken love song together, but they weathered the storm of their breakup, and the band went on to become one of the most popular of the 90’s.

‘Come To My Window’ by Melissa Ethridge – After Melissa Ethridge announced she was a lesbian, this was the first song she released. And it really showed how times were changing, because it became a big hit. It always made me think of a beautiful ‘Romeo and Juliet’ story between a lesbian couple, but it was a wonderful love song to listen to no matter what your sexual orientation.

‘I Will Always Love You’ by Whitney Houston – What ‘My Heart Will Go On’ was for the late 90’s, this song was for the early 90’s. It was featured in the film ‘The Bodyguard’, which was panned by critics, but a big commercial success. Whitney Houston’s powerful voice can still give listeners chills, and her version endures as one of the greatest love songs of all time.

‘Kiss Me’ by Six Pence None the Richer – Adorable lead singer Leigh Nash lent her mesmerizing voice to this sweet and innocent song. With all the songs about sex released during the 90’s, it was refreshing to hear one about the simple act of kissing.
