Thrift Stores – Boutique and Name Brands in Unlikely Places

Casual Clothing, Donate Clothing, Thrift Store Shopping, Thrift Stores

Whether you are on a tight budget or simply don’t have much money, thrift stores are great places to shop. Thrift stores go by different names – Valu Thrift, Goodwill, Christian Mission, Bargain Consignment Shops and Salvation Army. They all have one thing in common. They sell clothing, accessories, shoes, books, furnishings, appliances, and household items that have been donated. These type stores are either in business for themselves or for a humanitarian cause.

Some have the misconception that thrift stores only sell worn or used items, hence, the term “second hand” thrift stores. That is not always the case. Thrift stores have a nice mix of new and used clothing and other items. Retail stores donate out of season items they were unable to sell. Many shoppers donate clothing that has buyer’s tags still on them.

When in a financial pinch but still needing certain clothing or accessories, thrift store shopping is the thing to do. For someone in the beginning phases of a business start up, thrift stores have an assortment of business casual clothing – blouses, slacks, skirts, suits, blazers -that can be purchased without taking a big bite out of the budget. I had a particular look that I wanted for my business, and at the time I didn’t have the money to buy from a department store. One day, as I was donating clothing to one of the thrift stores, I decided to look around. While there, I was able to find blazers in my size and in the colors I needed to present a professional look. For those with expensive taste, there are items that may appeal to them as well. I was able to find an authentic Gucci leather handbag for $2.00.

Although thrift stores are the places to go when you need items at a sharp discount, here are some things I learned to be aware of when I shop.

Go shopping at a thrift store on a day when you have hours to look and shop. Unlike department stores, thrift store clothing racks are not necessarily organized by size.

Don’t expect primo service from employees at thrift stores.

Try to find out what days of the week the delivery truck brings in items and how soon new arrivals will be put on the floor and try to visit and shop on that day.

Always wash, sanitize or dry clean clothing and items purchased at thrift stores before wearing or using them.
