Things to Do in Shipshewana Indiana

Middlebury, Shipshewana Indiana

There are many things to do and see in Shipshewana Indiana, and like many other well known highly commercialized Amish towns, many of these places are expensive tourist traps. Whether on vacation or just visiting for the day, some of the best things to do and see in Shipshewana Indiana aren’t geared toward tourists. They are the places the locals go to eat and shop for bargains. These things to do in Shipshewana Indiana will give you a real taste of the area, and they will give you insight into the Amish way of life. I live in the Shipshewana Indiana area, and I visit these must-see places in Shipshewana almost every time I’m in town. Each time I visit these locations I see something different, and I look forward to returning to Shipshewana where I can find bargains on some of the best cheeses, spices, meals, and handmade items the area has to offer.

Deutsch Kase Haus

If you like cheese, you haven’t had the best cheese until you’ve had cheese from Deutsch Kase Haus in Middlebury Indiana, which is right next door to Shipshewana. The first time I tried cheese from Deutsch Kase Haus I immediately knew the difference between store-bought cheese and fresh and delicious cheese made by the cheese experts at Deutsch Kase Haus. Name-brand cheese sold in stores doesn’t compare to the cheese sold at what locals call “The Cheese Factory”.

Visit Deutsch Kase Haus on Monday and chances are you’ll be able to see the cheese being made through large windows that separate the store from the processing area. Monday through Saturday you’ll be able to sample every type of cheese they sell, and free samples will help you narrow down your choices. In addition to cheese, Deutsch Kase Haus also sells genuine fresh-churned butter, various spreads, pickled items, and a wide array of old-fashioned candies. You’ll also find a variety of souvenirs such as Amish puzzles, games, bracelets, necklaces, postcards, refrigerator magnets, novels, cookbooks, and a number of other interesting items.
