The Watch Department: Good Buys in Men’s Watches at Kohl’s

kohl's, Zoo York

Kohl’s department store does a good job of creating an upscale atmosphere while providing affordable quality merchandise. If you are shopping for a nice gift for a man on Christmas, Father’s Day, or a Birthday, you’ll find a great selection of watches in the Kohl’s Jewelry department. Kohl’s carries brands like Armitron, Casio, Bulova, Caravelle, Citizen, Pulsar, Relic, Seiko, Timex, and Zoo York.

Men’s watches at Kohl’s range in price from as low as $20 up to $600. The most impressive watch that I’ve ever spotted at Kohl’s was the incredible stainless steel Bulova Precisionist. It’s a quartz watch with an impressive case, a carbon-fiber dial, a very precise movement and smoothly sweeping second hand. At the more affordable end of the spectrum, there are lots of quartz watches from brands like Armitron and Zoo York in the $20 to $30 price range. However, the watch department at Kohl’s offers the best selection in the middle price ranges were brands like Relic and Caravelle by Bulova offer great values at prices between $50 and $100.

Over the years, some of the coolest watches in my personal collection have come from Kohl’s. Here are some of my favorite examples:

1. Caravelle by Bulova Stainless Steel Watch. Every man needs a classic diver-style watch, but a Rolex Submariner isn’t in the cards for everyone. However, Bulova’s Caravelle brand makes a diver-style watch that has nearly perfect proportions and a classic no-nonsense look. In my eyes, this is the perfect watch.

2. Precision by Gruen Diver-Style. The Kohl’s watch department is a fun place to browse. They always have interesting and inexpensive quartz watches. One such watch is the Precision by Gruen watch that a picked up at Kohl’s a couple of years ago. It had a very cool diver-style case and bezel on a fairly flimsy nylon and Velcro strap. I replaced the band with a nice stainless band and now the watch is a classic “bang around” watch.

3. Grenen Men’s Analog Watch with Subdials. Skagen is famous for thin, Scandinavian-designed, watches that have an almost avant-garde look. They established a Grenen-brand that was sold at Kohl’s. I got a great clearance deal on a Grenen watch with subdials and a soft leather band that feels like the leather seats of a fine European sports car.

4. Relic Silver Stainless Steel Multifunction Watch. When I went shopping for some dressy watches for the workplace, I bought myself a Relic watch that had moonphase subdials. It shows the sunshine during the day and the moon’s face at night. It the kind of functionality that you’d expect on the finest of European watches, but it costs less than $100 for a respectable watch at Kohl’s.

5. Relic Analog Watches with LCD Faces. Finally, Kohl’s has a varied selection that appeals to a wide variety of buyers. My mother-in-law bought me a pair of Relic watches with digital faces and analog dials. One watch counts the seconds as a digital read out behind the dial and the other watch flashes various patterns every few seconds. The watches are interesting, but not outlandish. They fit in perfectly in a business casual workplace.

Kohl’s is one of those stores that always runs pretty good sales and has a variety of rewards programs associated with their credit card. Kohl’s is also one of the best places to check out Relic and Caravelle watches. All in all, the watch department at Kohl’s is always worth a visit.
