The Top Auto Manufacturers’ Warranties

There are dozens of great cars available to American buyers these days. Whether you are looking for fuel economy, cargo space, performance, or reliability, you are sure to find what you are looking for at your nearest dealership. In fact, tests and reviews show that it’s actually pretty hard to buy a ‘bad’ car on today’s market. With fuel economy and safety regulated by the government, and the plethora of reviews available online, it’s easy to spot troubled models before you seriously consider them as options.

Something that’s not quite as clear cut, however, is the warranty each brand offers. There are several companies touting the “best warranty available,” but they qualify the claims with a particular warranty or limit them to “in its class.” So, how do each of the warranty programs stack up? Here is a break down of the ten best-selling car brands in America by warranty:

The most common warranty class on the top ten list also offers the least coverage. With a basic warranty (or Bumper to Bumper) of 3 years and 36,000 miles and a drivetrain warranty extending out to 5 years and 60,000 miles, five car manufacturers fall in line with a fairly average amount of coverage:

Subaru

Basic: 3/36
Drivetrain: 5/60

Nissan

Basic: 3/36
Drivetrain: 5/60

Honda

Basic: 3/36
Drivetrain: 5/60

Toyota

Basic: 3/36
Drivetrain: 5/60

Ford

Basic: 3/36
Drivetrain: 5/60

American-born brands fill the next level with three names offering a 3 year and 36,000 mile basic warranty, but bump up the drivetrain coverage to 5 years and 100,000 miles:

GMC

Basic: 3/36
Drivetrain: 5/100

Dodge

Chevy

Two young Korean imports take the top honors, though. The similarity doesn’t stop with the warranty coverage – Hyundai is now the parent company of Kia. Their basic coverage matches drivetrain coverage from most companies while their 100,000 mile drivetrain coverage stretches out over an impressive decade:

Kia

Basic: 5/60
Drivetrain: 10/100

Hyundai

Basic: 5/60
Drivetrain: 10/100
