The Rules to the Game of Cricket

Crickets

Just in case you are new to cricket you will definitely need to comprehend the basic cricket rules first. There are many rules to learn about this fascinating game.

Cricket is a game played with two teams consisting of eleven players. One side bats first while the other side plays takes the field. The goal of the batting team is to score as many runs as possible, and the goal of the team playing defense in the field is to take ten wickets. What is a wicket? a wicket is when a player is out. So just like there are three outs in baseball before teams switch sides there are ten in cricket. This will leave one lone player on the batting side who is not out, because you cannot bat without one of your teammates at the other end. After both teams have batted the team with the most runs wins. In this aspect, cricket is akin to baseball in many ways.

In this next section I am going to walk you through a typical game of cricket. I will be highlighting the normal procedures in a cricket match.

The Beginning of a Cricket Match

The captain that wins the coin toss gets to choose either to bat or bowl first.

Then two players from the batting team go up to bat. The other nine players provide support for their team off the field of play anxiously waiting for their turn at bat.

The game is played by the bowler, bowling the cricket ball with the intention to try and get the batsman out. There are four way to do this:

1.Caught – This is when the batsman hits the ball up into the air and one of the eleven players in the field catches the ball before it hits the ground. Once again, very similar to the

game baseball.

2.Bowled – this is when the bowler bowls the ball and the batsman missed it and it hits the wickets located behind the batsman

3.Leg Before Wicket (L.B.W.) – This is when the ball hits the batsman on the leg and in the opinion of the umpire the ball would have hit the wickets.

4.Run Out – This is when the batsman runs to the wickets at each end and the fielding team breaks the wickets before he makes the other end.

Scoring Runs

There are two ways the batsmen can score runs and that is by either hitting the ball to the boundary, which is the circle that is placed around the pitch about sixty yards away from the pitch. The ball has to be hit over this boundary to score four runs. If it is hit over the boundary on the full the batting team tallies up six runs. The other way to score runs is when the two batsmen run between the wickets which are set at 22 yards apart this counts as a run.

At the conclusion of the game each team will pick a player of the day from their team.
