The Muppet Show: The 10 Worst Characters

Muppet, Muppet Show, The Muppet Show

My mother always used to tell me, “Lee, if you don’t have anything nice to say…then write a top 10 list about it.” The Muppet Show is one of the greatest television shows ever created but even the Muppet Show had some faults, mainly some of the characters.

There are ten characters from the Muppet Show that I can’t stand. I know many people will disagree greatly with these but just remember that I was dropped on my head several times as a kid. If my list includes somebody you love then blame my older brothers.

10. Rizzo the Rat
Gonzo is one of my favorite Muppet Show characters but his friends, both rodents and poultry, I’m not a big fan of. I did enjoy Rizzo’s narration in The Muppet’s Christmas Carol so that’s why he is so low on the list but most of the time Rizzo is just a big annoyance.

9. Muppet Newsman
The Muppet Newsman was your typical newsman of that era and that’s why I hate him. Seriously, how could people actually go on the air with those awful jackets!

8. Janice
I’m sure we all know somebody that has an annoying voice, whether it’s the tone or pitch of their voice or an accent like Fran Drescher’s laugh or the accent of anybody in the movie Fargo. Janice is the Muppet Show character that represents those people. That voice just makes me want to punch myself in the ear because ringing would be better than hearing her voice.

7. Sam the Eagle
Sam the Eagle is hands down the most boring Muppet Show character. Listening to Sam the Eagle speak is like watching Keanu Reeves and Paul Walker trying to perform a scene from Romeo and Juliet.

6. Bunsen Honeydew
Bunsen Honeydew is a perfect of example of rule #127 in television and film: The sidekick is usually more entertaining. Beaker is awesome. Bunsen Honeydew? Not so much.

5. Wayne and Wanda
Wayne and Wanda were one of the reoccurring gags that I couldn’t stand on the Muppet Show. Wayne and Wanda were an awful singing group. Not even their bad luck that often caused them pain could make me enjoy these two characters.

4. Scooter
The only way Scooter ever got to be on the show was by mentioning that his uncle owned the show. If you’re a Muppet and the only way you can get on the Muppet Show is to blackmail somebody then that’s pretty pathetic.

3. Kermit the Frog
I know people aren’t going to like this one. I’m sure when you were a kid and saw Kermit the Frog you thought he was awesome and he is the star of the show but I challenge you to go back and watch the first couple of seasons of the Muppet Show on DVD. If you really pay attention to Kermit the Frog he’s actually the second most self-centered, egotistical character in a children’s show behind only Bugs Bunny. During the segments where Kermit the Frog interviews the guest every question is basically code for “will you say something good about me now?”

2. Robin
Sadly, even The Muppet Show jumped the shark. Nope, one annoying little frog just wasn’t enough. The Muppet Show had to bring in another frog to be Kermit’s nephew. Couldn’t they have at least made a relative of one of the good characters?

1. Miss Piggy
I’m sure a lot of people won’t like that Miss Piggy is on the list too. I can see why people would be tricked into liking Kermit the Frog because he appears to be a likable character if you don’t pay attention real closely. But I will never understand why a single person likes Miss Piggy. There are absolutely no redeeming qualities about Miss Piggy whatsoever. She’s loud, she’s annoying, she’s self-centered, she’s a pig. Why does anybody like her?
