The Mississippi Hunter’s Education Program is an important step for any beginning hunter, regardless of their age. This program is responsible for instructing these beginning hunters on the correct and safest ways to enjoy the sport of hunting. The Mississippi Hunter’s Education Program is a program that must be completed by any hunter whose birthday is after January 1, 1972 who wishes to purchase a Mississippi hunting license. Completion of this program is also required of hunters who are between the ages of 12 and 16 years old who wish to hunt alone in Mississippi. But, hunting students attending the Mississippi Hunter’s Education Program must be at least 10 years old at the time they attend the program. The program is offered by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, has no fee charged and is offered at locations throughout the state.
The young hunter in Mississippi that is required to satisfactorily complete the Mississippi Hunter’s Education Program has a decision to make regarding their options for obtaining their certificate. They can either attend the program in a traditional classroom setting or they can take the course via the internet through the Mississippi Hunter Education Internet Course. No matter which method the student chooses, they will learn skills that will allow them to make decisions to become better and safer hunters.
The traditional classroom setting consists of the student attending 10 hours of instruction along with time spent with field training. During this time the student will learn hunter ethics, hunter responsibility, firearm history, rifle and shotgun information, handling firearms, marksmanship tips, more about muzzleloading and archery, wildlife identification and wildlife management. Students will also have the opportunity to learn survival techniques, first aide and water safety. After completing the 10 hours of classroom time and field work the student will have to take and pass an exam in order to receive their certificate.
The student that chooses the Mississippi Hunter Education Internet Course has the opportunity to work independently on their Hunter Education Certificate, take apre -certification exam then finish the course with a three hour classroom course. This three hour course includes interaction with an instructor, field work and the final exam, which they will be required to take and pass before they too will receive their certificate, just like the student who chose the traditional classroom setting.
