The Feet of the Athlete: A Review of Tinactin Liquid Spray

His feet take a regular beating. Stuffed in tightly laced hockey skates, his feet were trapped, begging for ventilation. In the summer, his feet sweltered under the poor conditions set by a thirteen-year-old boy that refuses to wear socks with his black skateboard sneakers. One might say that his feet paid him back.

Tough Actin’Tinactin Liquid Spray is an antifungal treatment that promises to cure and prevent most Athlete’s Foot problems. After I saw his feet close up, I knew that he would need something to relieve his peeling, cracked, and itchy feet. At the time I wasn’t sure exactly what had taken over his feet, but I soon realized that he had a case of Athlete’s Foot. His hockey coach confirmed this and recommended Tinactin.

About Tinactin

Tinactin is a treatment that is used for Athlete’s Foot. The active ingredient is Tolnaftate 1%, with alcohol SD-40-2 (36% w/w), BHT, isobutene, PPG-12-buteth-16 listed as the inactive ingredients in Tinactin Liquid Spray. The canister that we purchased was a 5.3 ounce spray. The label states that Tinactin Liquid Spray relieves itching and burning, and that it is #1 Most Recommended by Certified Athletic Trainers. We were further enticed that it is a “tough actin” treatment. Athlete’s Foot can be quite bothersome if left untreated for long and we were looking for an aggressive remedy.

Treatment with Tinactin Liquid Spray

Treatment is easy to follow. The directions on the Tinactin Liquid Spray canister recommend the following steps for treatment:

1. Wash affected area and dry thoroughly
2. Shake can well and spray a thin layer over affected area twice daily
3. Pay special attention to areas between the toes, wear well-fitting, ventilated shoes and change shoes and socks at least once a day
4. Use daily for 4 weeks, if conditions persist, ask a doctor

Tinactin Liquid Spray may be used for the prevention of future athlete’s foot by applying the spray to the feet once or twice a day. There is no stated limitation for using the product on a regular basis, if needed. If irritation occurs, at any time during use, however, it is recommended that use of Tinactin be stopped. Aside from treating Athlete’s Foot, it is noted that Tinactin is also helpful for the treatment of ringworm.

The End of Peeling Feet

My nervous little hockey player was a little cautious that Tinactin might be irritating to his already irritated feet, but he was thrilled when the first spray caused a slight cooling sensation on his feet and a feeling of relief to the peeling and itchiness. It did not burn or sting upon application, and the treatment itself was simple to do. I sprayed his feet in the morning and before bed after he washed his feet. He then aired them out overnight after the “evening spraying” of Tinactin. The aerosol spray smells faintly like Aqua Net hairspray, but the scent does not linger. As an active athlete, he will always have to take more care of his feet, but Tinactin has been helpful in preventing the conditions that first made his feet rebel.

Since the first treatment with Tinactin Liquid Spray my active son has not had another case of Athlete’s Foot. During hockey season, he sometimes sprays his feet before he puts on his skates for a measure of prevention. I also bought him some ankle socks to wear with sneakers in the warmer months to prevent the previous “sneaker oven” that he had created by wearing swampy black skater sneakers without socks. No wonder we needed some Tinactin!
